developed a method of telling
the age of ancient coins by the
proportion of their component
metals. Dr. Earle R. Caley and
Wallace H . Deebel explained
that their studies have shown
there are systematic chronolog
ical changes in the relativft
amounts of lead and tin in an
cient Greek coinage bronze,
with later coins containing more
lead.
A jet-propelled steam-operated
boat was developed as far back
as the 18th century. George
Washington watched a test
mndel run in 1784 and called its
demonstration of the propelling
principle one of "vast importance."

suffered for eight years with
arthritis and have had weeks
now with no pain or lameness.
1 don't understand Mrs E. H.
at all. In the calcium pamphlet
I suggest an optimal daily ration
of calcium and vitamin D for
any one with rheumatiz. This
means every day the year
around, for it is essential food
which the ordinary refined diet
fails to provide in sufficient
quantity, and not, as Mrs. E. H.
and a great many other readers
assume, medicine.

matiz. I am not able to work
again and hold down a good sec
retarial job."
From Mrs. A.V report, one
might infer that rheumatiz dis
abled her so that she could not
work but not necessarily. Per

Veterans Hour
Slated Friday
The April program of the Vet
erans Hour variety show and
radio quiz, sponsored by District
13, American Legion, Radio Sta
tion KYJC, and presented at the
Veterans Administration Domi
ciliary theater, Friday, April 8,
at 7:45 p.m.
The program will be under,
the supervision of Ashland Post
14, and will feature a .cast from
the music and drama classes of
the Southern Oregon college.
The radio quiz, with Franklin
Girard, director of recreation at
Camp White, as quiz master, will
feature five members of the
Domiciliary competing for prizes
donated by merchants of Ash
land. .
The Ladies auxiliary, Unit 14,
Ashland, will serve refreshments
of doughnuts and coffee after
the program.
The public is invited.
Domestic airlines in the Unit

Does pasteurized and homogenized
milk contain the same amount of cal
cium as raw milk? Would buttermilk
be equal to raw milk in calcium con

Answer Approximately the same
amount of calcium in all the milks
mentioned, but raw whole milk con
tains also some vitamin D which is
essential for utilization of the calcium.
The vitamin D is largely removed in
the cream and butter.

confined places would be at ease
if tossed into the Lowndes county
jail here.
The jail is so full of holes that
prisoners remain strictly at their
own risk.
"Any prisoner who wishes
freedom can merely step through
one of a number of holes in the
floor and walk away," said Sher
iff C. E. Farmer.
The sheriff quit plugging up
the escape routes in the century
old jail months ago. It was a
losing battle.
"As fast as I filled in one hole,
they dug some place else," he
explained.
Farmer said the prisoners are
on the "honor system," promis
ing to stay in jail before he'll
lock them up.
At least seven inmates have
gone back on their word and
skipped out. Several others" with
a touch of wanderlust were
thwarted only because of the
alertness of Farmer and jailer
Russel Scofield.
It's so easy to dig an escape
route that one prisoner made it
using only a fork handle and a
shattered chair leg.
"Our more dangerous prison
ers are placed in city jail for
safekeeping," Farmer said.

Mount Palomar, Calif. (U.R)
A new comet has been dis
covered in the heavens by as
tronomers at the Mount Palomar
Observatory, according to the
National Geographic Society.
The comet is of the 17th mag
nitude and cannot be seen with
the naked eye. It was discovered
March 22 by Dr. Robert G. Har
rington and Dr. George O. Abell
while they were making a pho
tographic sky survey, the society
said.
Iron is produced in 18 of the
American states.
