ENOUGH TO MAKE A PESSIMIST
Regular readers, if any, will
have ' noticed, I hope, that the
conductor is pessimistic about
the diagnosis
and treatment
of chronic "ar
thritis." In the first
place, most vic
tims of the "ar
thritis" swin
dle haven't the
least idea what
ails them nor
r. Brr have they the
wisn to Know. They are so awed
and dazzled by the pretensions
made and the gadgets displayed
by their racketeers that they
drift along like children as long
as their money holds out or their
"leading"- quacks come up every
month or two with the very
latest wonder drug, which, un
fortunately, is not yet freely
available and hence extremely
expensive ...
Not yet freely available to the
general profession, that is. By
dint of his eminence, the charla
tan has enough at his disposal to
take care of a few selected cases.
The new drug has what the trick
sters call "great promises," even
though it may not be an immed
iate cure of arthritis.
For a while the medical jour
nals carry reports of treatment
of series of cases with the drug
Minimum Standards
For Housing Adopted
Chicago (U.R) Eight cities
adopted codes setting minimum
standards for housing in 1954,
and more are due to adopt such
codes this year.
The National Association tf
Housing and Redevelopment
Officials said cities have found
housing codes a major weapon in
halting deterioration or blight.
Cities that adopted codes in
1954 include Pittsburgh and Phil
adelphia, Pa:; Sarasota, Fla.;
Lynchburg, Va.; High Point, N.
C; Louisville, Ky.; New Haven,
Conn.; and Dayton, O.
In addition, Milwaukee, New
York City and Baltimore have
been reviewing their codes to
make sure they are up to date.
Chicago, which has housing;
safety and sanitation require
ments in scattered ordinances, is
considering putting them to
gether into a single code.
Housing codes in general set
standards that fall into three cat
egories: i
(1) Required facilities, such as
lighting, ventilation, garbage
disposal, and bath and toilet ac
commodations. t (2) Maintenance, such as keep
ing houses painted, or maintain
ing fire escapes.
(3) Occupancy, such as pro

which seem (to the novice) very
encouraging. Although I should
have known better, from bitter
experience., I permitted my per
sonal sympathy to overrule my
professional judgment and rec
ommended the use of a "wonder"
drug for the rheumatiz (the pa
tient's physician called it ar
thritis) of a member of my own
family. The dope gave extraor
dinary relief from pain and lame
ness for a few days and like an
irresponsible child, I hastened
to tell all about it here.
Simultaneously with publica
tion of my half-baked plug came
reports of disastrous by-effects
produced by the drug, some of
them fatal. And, while there was
no such effect in the case in
which I was interested, the pain
and lameness returned as the
effects of the drug wore off, and
that was the end of the experi
ment. I broke the Hippocratic in
junction which I have tried to
follow here since Topsy was a
colt. And I tell you I prayed hard
that no harm would come to any
reader who might take the drug
on the strength of my ill-considered
praise.
Yes, I'm a pessimist. Want to
make anything of it?
Let me ask you poor geeks who
are under treatment for "arthri
tis" two simple questions:
(1) What does the term arthri
tis mean? It means joint infla
mation and the doctor who pro
nounces your trouble joint in
flammation in Greek or Latin
merely translates what you tell
him. '
(2) Whatever became of chron

fear has no foundation. Perhaps your
thyroid is overactive or you may have
