knows, gets his
exercise by
knocking
a white pill
across the

ial green if
he can get up
ahead of the
squirrels.
Our first leader, George
Washington, was a puny lad and
came down with one thing after
another and "fever and bodily
pain" wore him thin. He was de
termined to build his muscles.
He wrestled and ran and he rode
pink-coated to the hounds. And
when he ran, he ran on time and
had little truck with anyone
who didn't. He had a secretary
who also professed to be a run
ner, but his aide was a Johnny-come-lately,
often. One day when
the secretary turned up five
minutes late, the general asked
how come? The fellow said his
watch had stopped.
A Good SI Watch
"Well," said the President,
"either you get a new watch or
I get a new secretary."
The man bought a dollar time
piece which served him well.
Old John Adams, the second
President, occasionally wet ' a
line in a trout stream, and when
riding would gallop '"until he
wore out the horse."
Thomas Jefferson climbed
aboard a nag every day and
applied the spurs over an eight
mile course. He once remarked
that it "jiggled his liver" and
kept him in trim.
The fourth President, James
Madison, likewise was a high
, backer on a pony. He had mis-
eries of the chest and walking
pained him. He relaxed in the
saddle. .James Monroe loved to
ride, too. And so did Andrew
Jackson, who said toward the
end that he had spent a '-'full
life with a leg up on a horse."
A Game of Mibs ' ,
John Tyler was handsome, tall
and slender, and clean of face.
He rode and he hunted. But
when he was notified that he
would be the next President, he
was down on his knees. He was
said to have looked up at the
messenger and said:
"Just a minute, please."
Old John at the moment, was
knuckling down in a game of
marbles with his young son.
Zachary Taylor was pretty
tough, too.. One March he swam
the Ohio river from Kentucky
to the Indiana side when the
stream was cluttered with ice.
He dried off, ran for the high
office and won.
John Quincy Adams used to
take a'morning dip in the Po
tomac, in the raw. One day a
tramp came along and walked
away with his clothes. The Pres
ident noticed a small boy fish
ing. He bade him run up to the
White House and ask Mrs. Ad
ams to send along a pair of
pants.
The boy did and was reward
ed with a fine breakfast at the
White House with the President
of the United States. .
In 1910-1919, six pounds of
canned fruits and juices were
purchased for every 100 pounds
of fresh; in 1950, 33 pounds of
canned fruits and juices plus
four pounds of frozen were
purchased for every 100 pounds
of fresh.

This is a big book week at the
White House. Currently on sale
is "Run Silent, Run Deep," a
novel by Cmdr. Edward L.
Beach,, who is the President's
naval aide.
Behind Beach's book is "The
Assassins," by Robert J. Dono
van of the New York Herald
Tribune. Donovan's book, avail-"
able at the book stalls; April 15,
is the finest work to date on the
screwballs who take aim at a
Chief Executive.
Donovan, a civilian, has sup
plied the Secret Service with
some fine source material.
Coming out April 11 is a book
length feature by the conductor
of this space. Name? "Meet
Mister Ei5enhower," published
by Harper & Brothers and it
makes a grand Easter gift.
Commander Beach is a sub
marine officer who during
World War II. took his boat
through some" amazing perform
ances. Beach is known to his
colleagues as "Ned" and for a
writer, he is one of the most
taciturn, close - mouthed men
around the Chief Executive.
Beach's first book was the grip
ping, non-fiction "Submarine.''
As a member of the Presi
dent's staff said, "'Submarine'
was so real that I had the nose
bleed." "Run Silent, Run
Deep" is just about as good.
Beach blushes at the thought
that he is a writer.
Television people may not
have spotted it, but toe Fresi
rent has a heavy sun-tan. He
got it from an infra-red globe
in the office of his doctor.
A lady who knows Presi
dent and Mrs. Eisenhower rather
well swears that the White
House trapped nine, instead of
three squirrels. The President's
