tired on pension and social secur
ity amounting to bare subsist-
ance complains
of several
things, scilicet

lars he receives
in these doles
buy only half
the groceries
the dollars he
would have

(2) He had received no raise in
pay in the last 25 years in fact,
employers made it plain they
were keeping a man over 50 on
the payroll only out of kindness.
(3) He has few close friends,
merely casual acquaintances,
and so he feels isolated.
(4) Now he is becoming 'de
pressed and worries a good deal
about hardening of the arteries,
a stroke, cancer . . .
The first and second com
plaints are beyond my province,
although they may have a good
deal to do with what ails the
man.
The second complaint, imply
ing that a man over fifty doesn't
rate a raise in pay and ought to
be thankful to be kept on at the
same pay he received 25 years
ago, is reasonable enough. How
come we don't fire, retire or
carry on the payroll as a kind
ness business executives, govern
ment o f f i ci a 1 s, congressmen,
judges, army and navy officers,
doctors, lawyers, editors, o r
preachers because they are past
fifty.
The third and fourth com
plaints remind me first that in
half an hour I must shut down
for the day and hie away to the
bowling green. Lawn bowls, that
is, an ancient game played on a
plot of greensward as smooth as
a billiard table. Desciption of the

It's just too bad, I think, that
this poor soul who retired with
a dull, sickening thud, never had
the good fortune to become ad
dicted to bowling on the green
or some similar game, avocation,
hobby, or extracurricular activ-
lly when he was thirty, forty,
fifty, sixty, or seventy. It would
take up the slack and keep him
from feeling isolated, out of it,
friendless, and depressed now
that there's nothing interesting
to do. Haying such an outside in
terest makes retirement easy. It
saves many a man from rapid de
cline after he retires.
The , diseases this poor soul
worries about will come if he is
so fated, and if I may offer him
some advice, 1 11 say he might
better worry about how he can
get by St. Peter in the hereafter.
