Announce Trothal
Sacramento (U.R) Gov.
and Mrs. Goodwin J. Knight Sat
urday announced the engagement
of their daughter, Carolyn 21, to
Charles V. Weedman, 27, of
Bakersfield.
The couple plans to be married
in the Governor's Mansion in
mid-summer. They met while
both students at the University
of Southern Califorina.
Miss Knight has completed
her junior year at USC, and Mr.
Weedman was graduated Summa
Cum Laude in 1953 as a psycho
logy major. He has finished one
year of law school at the Uni
versity of California at Los An
geles and plans to enroll in Hast
ing Law School in the fall.
He is temporarily employed as
a laboratory technician at the
Metro Goldwyn Mayer studios
in Hollywood. He served two
years in Japan and Hawaii with
the Air Force and holds a lieuten
ant's rank in the Air Force Re
serve. Mr Weedman is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Charles S. Weed
man of Bakersfield. His father
is employed as a Santa Fe rail
way engineer.

by William Archibald to be pre
sented by the dramatics depart
ment of Lewis and Clark col
lege, April 1 and 2.
Miss West stars as Miss Gid
dens, a governess sent by an
English gentleman to tend his
niece and nephew in a remote
part of the country. She finds
that the ghosts of two former
servants, who in life had tried
to corrupt the children, are re
turning to continue the task.
The story of "The Innocents" is
the governess" fight to over
ccme the power of the ghosts
The play is based on a story by
Henry James, "The Turn of the
Screw."
A music major. Miss West's
previous dramatic experience
has included playing the leads
in "The Taming of the Shrew,
and "The Man Wno Came to
Dinner." Kirk West, brother of
the star, will serve as a mem
ber of the technical staff. He is
a freshman in political science.
They are the children of the
Rev. and Mrs. D. K. West of
52 Ross court.

of the annual educational and
fund-raising crusade of the Am
erican Cancer society in Jack
son county have been announc
ed by Mrs. John S. Day, county
chairman. The month-long cam
paign opened April 1.

campiagn is being conducted by
the Cancer society to teach the
public cancer's even danger
signals and to urge the neces
sity of regular physical check
ups to detect other symptoms
that can be recognized only by
a physician.
"Research, under Cancer so
city grants, is seeking to solve
the baffling mysteries which
may provide the key to event
ual victory over this world pub
lic enemy."
The ACS defense program
against cancer is financed . by
voluntary contributions of mil
lions of Americans during Its
annual, fund raising drive.
"This year the nation-wide
goal is $24,000,000.
"Urgency of the cancer fund
appeal and the educational pro
gram in conjunction with it can
not be overemphasized," Mrs.
Day states.
"We are living today in an
era of fear of surprise atomic
or hydrogen bomb attack on the
United States," Mrs. Day states.
"To guard against this threat,
our government i$ spending bil
lions of dollars annually for na
tional defense. This civilization
shattering attack may we
hope never materialize.
"But our country is faced
with another deadly attack that
is not just a threat. It is a grim
reality. Last year cancer killed
230,000 men, women, and chil
dren in the United States.
"Surgery and radiation, , the
chief weapons against that disease."

New York (U.R) The day
may come when a woman cleans
house simply by turning the
hose on it.
Paul McCobb, young New
York designer, said new develop
ments in synthetics in the next
few years virtually could do
away with house cleaning as
women now know it.
"Cleaning the living room
could be just a matter of turning
the hose on it," McCobb said,
"although frankly I don't think
women would want it that way."
McCobb isn't predicting what
new synthetics will appear
his business is design, not
chemistry. But whatever they
are, he said, they "must not ape
wood or fabrics. They will have
to have pelasing qualities which
belong to them alone."
Turning to comment on what
is ahead for 1955, McCobb pre
dicted more lightness and
brightness in home furnishings,
decorating runs about 10 years,"
"The cycle of color in home
McCobb said in an interview.
"We're just now getting out of
the dark wall era into one of off-

A coat of white paint, he said,

defects to recede, but dark
colors only highlight them.
"And white is the perfect
background shade," he said.
McCobb predicts an increas
ing use of such metals as brass,
copper and stainless steel not
only because of their easy main
tenance, "but also because they
give furniture a light, spacious
look which wood alone cannot
do.
Not that we're headed for an
all-metal era. Metal will be com
bined with wood.
"A real revolution in furni
ture tastes occurs about every 25
years," McCoTib said. "The cur
rent contemporary trend hasn't
nearly run its course." V -
