Central Point Telephone
subscribers here last night had
their new telephone instruments
activated and joined to the nation-wide
Bell network through
the Pacific Telephone. and Tele
graph company.
'Phone users here have; been
served by independent compan
ies since telephone service was
inaugurated some 55 years ago
and most of the time by the
Central Point Mutual Telephone
company, which sold its facili
ties to the PTT.
The changeover means that
subscribers will have dial tele
phones, rather than hand-crank
ed instruments, and for long-dis
tance service will have the PTT
services at their disposal.
NOrmandy Prefix
Central Pont exchange will
have the prefix NO (rmandy) 4
and all numbers will start with
these two letters and one num
ber. Directories for subscribers
have been distributed, and- are
available on request to subscri
bers in Medford and elsewhere
in the exchange area.
From now on. Central Point
subscribers wishing to dial Med
ford, should dial the number 7.
followed by the Medford num
ber they wish.
Medford subscribers wishing
to dial Central Point should dial
the number 3, followed by NO-
4, and then the number of the
party they wish, or a total of
eight turns of the dial.
In Central Point, the fire
uumber (both city and rural) is
NOrmandy 4-2244. The city hall
and police number is N04-2794.
PTT to Purchase
Phoenix 'Phones
Phoenix The Phoenix Rural
Telephone company Friday night
voted to accept the offer of the
Pacific Telephone and Tele
graph company to purchase its
equipment and serve its sub
scribers.
The firm, which was organized
In 1909, serves about 69 tele
phone subscribers in the area
around Phoenix. Damon Floyd
is president.
Jack Creager, manager of
PTT for the Medford-Ashland
area, said Saturday that work
will begin immediately instal
ling new telephone instruments
in the residences formerly served
by the small independent com
pany. The firm has operated
eight "farm line service" lines,
he said.
Because of the rapiddevelop
ment of the area, much of the
line service of the small com
pany ad of PTT were duplicated,
and the company decided it
would be to the best interests of
all concerned to let the PTT
take over the service.
Nicosia, Cyprus (U.R) Ter
rorists unleashed a coordinated
bombing attack on military in
stallations, a police station and
Radio Cyprus early Friday. It
was the first widespread violence
since Greece made its claim to
this British bastion in the Medi
terrian. At least one person was
killed and one injured. The gov
ernment reported a number of
arrests.

Brucellosis Control
Reorganization Plan
In County Announced
A reorganization of the brucel
losis, or Bang's disease, control
program in Jackson county was
announced here .Friday by Coun
ty Commissioner Chester Wendt,
Under the new setup, the
county court will be in charge
of the program, and the county
will be divided into three dis
tricts,
Two of the districts will be
operated the same as in the past.
They will be Districts 2 and 3.
In District -2, which includes
approximately the southeast
quarter of the county, Dr. Wal
ter W. Weller will be in charge
of testing and vaccinating all
cattle.
In District 3, which includes
approximately .the southwest
quarter of the county, Dr. Stan
ley Phillips will be in charge of
testing and vaccinating all cattle.
Federal District
District 2 has been changed to
a federal district. In it, Dr. K. C.
Farley will continue to test dairy
cattle, and Dr. E. M. Hannawalt,

Dr. George N. Gitzen, Dr. G. A;
Gitzen, and Dr. William J. Git
zen have been assigned to test
and vaccinate beef cattle.
Previously Dr. Hannawalt and
Dr. George N. Gitzen have been
serving as county veterinarians
without being assigned to a
specific district. The change was
required to conform to law.
Wendt stated that Dr. A. G
Beagle, federal veterinarian in
charge of brucellosis and tuber
culosis control, stationed in Port
land, has announced he will ap
point a supervising federal vet
erinarian for this area. The new
man will do no testing, but will
act as Beagle's representative
here. Dr. Farley will continue
as federal as well as county
veterinarian for the county.
Wendt noted that under the
new plan, it still will be possible
for stockmen to request and ob
tain the services of the veterinar
ian of their choice.
Strike of Astoria
Ferry Operators
Delayed by Union
Astoria (U.R) A possible
strike against ferry service here
over a dispute between Astoria
Navigation company and the
AFL Inland Boatmen's union
has : been postponed, it was re
ported Saturday.
The ferry 'M. ,R. Chessman,
riumber one ferry on the Astoria-
Megler Cplumbia river crossing,
is not involved. The dispute in
volves elmination of one deck
hand from the crew of the fer
ries Tourist No. . 2 and Tourist
Number 3.
Two Tied Up
The Chessman will go on the
run Sunday while the other two
boats will be tied up. The union
agreed to take no immediate ac
tion but Instead will try to ne
gotiate the issue withthe com
pany in mid-ApriL
The dispute is an outgrowth
of a Coast Guard order that an
extra pilot be carried on the
two ferries. It arose shortly af
ter the company added the extra
pilots but dropped one deck
hand from each of the ferries.
This leaves the two ferries with
cnly one deckhand instead of
two. The union said this violates
its contract.
Progress Toward
Two-Price Wheat
Seen by Officials
Washington (U.R) Two
Oregon wheat officials neaded
for home Saturday after a three-
week visit to the nation's capital
in which they said they believed
they had made progress toward
a so-called two-price plan for
wheat.
Marion Weatherford, Arling
ton, and Jack Smith, Condon,
represented the National Associ
ation of Wheat Growers as well
as their own groups. Weather-
ford is chairman of the Oregon
Wheat commission and -Smith
heads the federal programs com
mittee of the Oregon Wheat
league.
In Better Position
They said they were not
claiming victory for the two
price plan, cr domestic . parity
plan as they prefer to call it.
But they said that it seemed to
be in a better position in Con
gress. The plan is scheduled for
consideration in the House as
part of House bill 12.
Both expressed concern that
the plan may be lost in the con
troversy over that bill between
advocates of high supports and
advocates of low supports.

day as AFL plumbers were on
strike against five contractors.
The union is asking for a 10
cent hourly increase plus a
clause forbidding master plumb
ers from renting out tools of th
trade.

new telephone instrument installed recently
by Bud Ricks, installer-repairman for the
Pacific Telephone and Telegraph company, at
their Central Point residence. Mrs. Bishop
supervises. Most CentraL Point subscribers
have had two telephone instruments in recent
weeks, one hand-crank 'phone for service with
the Central Point Mutual Telephone comp
any, which went out of business last night,
and the other, the new dial telephones of the
PTT, which went into service last night.

Sams Valley Home
Destroyed by Fire
Sams Valley Mr. and Mrs.
Don Golden and family lost their
home and all their clothing and
furnishings Friday morning whe
their home burned to the ground.
The family was away at the
time of the fire and its origin
was not determined, according
to a report of the fire made by
friends. It is believed the house
was partially covered by insur
ance. A tool shed also was
burned. .
Residents of the area are col
lecting items and money to re
establish the family, -and dona
tions can be made at the Sams
Valley school or at the Gilbert
Mack home in Sams Valley.
In the family are two girls,
ages 7 and 3, and two boys, ages
5 and 6. Mrs. Golden wears size
14 clothing and Golden is of a
medium build, about 5 feet 8
inches tall.
The family is in need of cloth
ing, bedding, - dishes, kitchen
utensils, household furnishings
and other items.

A meeting of the 4-H Youth
group is planned for April 11.
The last meeting of the organi
zation was held at Bigham hall
on March 14 when a discussion
was conducted regarding who
will raise a calf to be given away
by the March of Dimes.
