Warsaw, Poland (Delayed)
(U.PJ This i3 a city of construc
tion projects, music and politi
cal question marks.
In this city of nearly a million
souls, which was 80 per cent de
stroyed during World War II,
the reconstruction miracle goes
on speeding to a conclusion that
will make it a show place.
There have been 250,000 flats
built here since the war. And
still th effort goes on, with of
ficials hoping for housing
enough in 1970 for 2,000,000
persons.
Russians Build "Symbol"
In the center of Warsaw is a
symbol which reminds the Poles
on whose side they are. It is the
huge peace Palace of Science
and Culture designed by Soviet
architects and built with Soviet
material by Russian labor as a
gift for the Polish people. It will
be completed in July.
Politically, a person can't tell
much from a surface look. Ex
cept for the fact that we Ameri
cans are definitely on the other
side in this competitive effort,
the official press is not as vicious
as it once was, those who live
here say.
In the last two years there has
been a definite "easing" of the
situation. There is no question
about where those who have a
vested interest in this , project
stand.
But those who ought to know
say the natural leaning of most
of the Poles is still to the West.
That's hard to believe with the
intensive "russif ication" pro
gram that has been and is going
on. .
At a reception given us by the
Warsaw press, we editors dis
cussed the French ratification of
the Paris treaties dispassionate
ly. The hope of Warsaw news
men is that, Russia and the
United States will find a modus
vivendi a peaceful solution to
their many problems.
Churches Crowded
In this land where about 90
to 95 per cent of the people are
Catholics, the churches are over
flowing with people. Interest in
religion is on the increase.
Prices are extremely high. It
is difficult to figure them out
exactly for the exchange rate is
so artificially high that we can't
buy anything.
In their effort it takes a la
borer from 20 to 40 days to buy
an ordinary pair of shoes. But
food is somewhat cheaper and
seemingly plentiful.
Eighty per cent of the farms
are still in private hands, but

the government continues its ef
fort to create more state farms.
Here, as we have found in other
Communistic countries, private
farms produce the most food,
with the cooperatives less effic
ient and state farms running a
poor third.
What happens to this country
of 26,000,000 in the next few
years is the big question mark.
No one yet knows the answer.
