warning the
public about

ical dangers involved in taking
"too much" vitamin D. How
much "too much" would be the
science experts never indicated.
The daily ration of vitamin D
I recommend, in the pamphlet
Young Folks and Old Folk,
available on request if you pro
vide stamped, self-addressed en
velope, is a little less than one
would eet in a fluidounce of
standard cod liver oil. Indeed, be
fore the discovery of vitamin D
by McCollum and his associates
in 1922, a minimum daily ration
of one fluidounce (2 tablespoon
fuls) of standard cod liver oil
was generally satisfactory treat
ment for chronic rheumatiz
but that was before "arthritis"
became the rage among gullible
customers with joint disability,
If you are supject to joint disabil
ity of over a year's standing, it
can do you no harm to read Cal
cium and Rheumatiz, likewise
available inclose ten cents in
addition if you want both pam
phlets.
A year or two ago, Drs. R. B
and A. Goldbloom reported in
Journal of Pediatrics" a case of
boric acid poisoning in an infant,
resulting from the use of borated
talcum powder. The doctors
thought enough boric acid to

sorbed through raw spots in the
skin. Thev added that thajr had
found 109 similar cases reported
in other medical journals
throughout the world.
That was enough. The sci
ence" writers ana editors zeal
ously warned the public against
further use of borated talcum,
boric acid solutions, boric acid
ointments. Gee whiz, what fools
these doctors be they have been
using saturated solution of boric
acid as an all-around cleansing,
soothing, mildly antiseptic lotion
for sore eyes, etc., for nearly a
century, and they never suspect
ed the stuff was poisonous until
the hasty experts published their
report.
A year or so after the Gold-
bloom report was published one
of the authors (R. B. Gold
bloom) published in the same
journal a retraction of the orig
inal allegation.
Russell Fisher M. D., Henry
Freimuth, Ph.D. , Kathleen
O'Connor, B.S., and Viola Johns,
M. D., remind us (JAMA 2555)
that boron is widely distributed
in fruits and other foods, and the
human organism constantly ab
sorbs and excretes it. Four ounces
(half a glass) of orange juice
might contain 1.68 mg. of boron,
equivalent to 9.6 mg. of boric
acid (approximately one-sixth of
a grain), and this fact renders the
usual chemical determination of
the presence of boric acid in the
urine invalid, though many "sci
entific" reports of alleged boric
acid poisoning from alleged ab
sorption through the skin have
rested on such "proof."
As I would say, one has to be
constantly on? guard against be
ing bamboozled when reading
current medical authorities
these "scientifics," as Lum would
say, seldom have the courage or
honesty to acknowledge and cor
rect an error, as Dr. Goldbloom
did.
Relax, everybody. There will

Oregon 'Navy' Plan In Police Measure
Salem (U.R) Oregon will
again have a "Navy" if the Legis
lature approves part of the state
police budget calling for $25,000
for purchase of an offshore
patrol boat.
The House Ways and Means
Committee Thursday approved
the fund in the $5,568,000
budget.
Sen. John Hounsell (R-Hood
River) said a much cheaper boat
was approved two years ago but
that it lost much of its bottom
while crossing the sand bar and
the mouth of the Columbia river.
The vessel up to then had
brought in $7500 in license fees
from wayward fishermen.
Fees collected are expected to
pay for the boat in four years.
The old boat was sold for about
$6,000.
The measure brought a bit of
joking when Sen. Gene Brown
asked if the measure called for
Rep. Orval Eaton of Astoria as
admiral of the Oregon Navy.
Sen. John Merrifield of Port
land suggested that Eaton take
command of the vessel with the
hole in its bottom.
