Long Preparation
The actual cut to dial opera
tion for the Central Point office
will be the final sten in nvor
month's work to bring the latest
i pe 01 dial telephone service to
this district,. said J. H. Creager,
Pacific Telephone manager. Pre
paration included construction
of a new concrete block build
ing, complete rehabilitation of
outside lines, and installation of
both central office facilities and
of customer instruments.
A small army of telephone
workers, many '"borrowed" from
offices in other parts of the state,
have contributed a variety of
skills to the project.
Engineering for this newest
addition to the Medford direct
dialing area was in the hands of
Senior Engineer Jim Hill and
Engineer W. C. Judy, assisted by
D. M. Anselm. S. D. Fuaua and
C. L. Main of Medford. and R. C.
Jackson and Joseph Ivanick of
Installation of dial equipment
in the new building began in
November under direction of
Western Electric foreman W. D.
Mold. Necessary companion
equipment in the Medford office
was installed by a crew under
the supervision of T. D. Killman.
Dials Installed

S. Barry, construction foreman,
directed the work of Medford
line crews who were joined by
construction foreman Henry C.
Weise and his three-man crew
from Newport; and Don Col-
trane, head lineman, and H. R.
Bytti, tractor operator from
Roseburg. Cable splicing was
under supervision of foreman
E. C. Spence.
Installation of dial telephones
in the Central Point area began
late in January under direction
of plant service foreman W. W.
Williams and Earl DeLisle.
Girls in the Medford business
office, principally Constance
Ames and Shirley Deen, have
been busy for weeks with serv
ice orders and customer records
in connection with the change.
At the same time Outside Rep
resentative Ken McDonald has
been busy contacting subscrib
ers affected by the service im
provement prosram. M. O. Wal
ker, senior deskman. has been
swamped with paper work. too.
in changing and bringing up to
date the Central Point customer !
records.
Supervising Wire Chief R. F.
Rogers, under whose direction
the Central Point "cut" is being
made tonight, said Merton Lys
ter, senior switchman, and Jim
Tillery, switchman, will handle
the transfer operation in the
Medford dial office and Dick
Ludwig and Howard Rickman,
switchmen, will handle the cut
of toll facilities.
No Interruption
There will be no interruption
of service at the time of the cut
because all Central Point sub
scribers who have had telephone
service previously now have two
instruments. The new dial ones
will be "brought to life" at 11
p.m. when Chief Switchman Car
rol Judy, assisted by Harris
Ross, Howard Phillips and John
Sedey strip threaded "picks" or
"blocking tools" from banks of
line relays in the new office. The
old instruments will be removed
in a few days.
There may still be a few tele
phones in Medford without let
tered dials, says Creager. Those
customers whose instruments do
not have both letters and num
bers may obtain the up-to-date
dial by calling repair service
(114). There is no charge for the
change of dial plates.
The assignment of 2-letter, 5-
digit numbers in Central Point
(prefix NOrmandy 4) is a step
m the establishment of a uni
form nation-wide numbering
plan which will permit speedy
long distance dialing by opera
tors at first and eventually by
the customers themselves.
Plane Lands Safely
After Throwing Prop
San Francisco (U.P.) A
United Air lines DC-4 carrying
47 passengers and three crew
members landed safely here yes
terday after losing a propeller
"and a few connected parts," on
a flight from Seattle.
A UAL spokesman said the 1
accident occurred near the coast
line near Crescent City, Calif.
There was no report on where
the parts landed, but the pilot
believed they fell into the Pa
cific ocean.
The airline said the plane had
no difficulty flying on three engines.
