Communism has just suffered
a big defeat in Italy a defeat
which is a personal victory for
M&L. Vernier Mario
Scelba.
As the result
of a labor un
ion election,
the Commun
ists have lost
control of the
workers of the
Fiat Motor Co.,
in Turin.
That may

much. But Fiat is Italy's biggest
industrial enterprise. Fiat mech
anics are regarded as the cream
of Italian industrial workers.
But the Reds had controlled
them for years.
Communism has not been do
ing so well in Italy for quite a
while. Although the Reds fought
desperately to win the Fiat an
nual election, they lost out by
better than a two-to-one major
ity. The defeat is expected to
have its effect all over Italy.
Ambassador Luce Helps
The Red defeat is a victory
for Scelba, now visiting in Am
erica, because he-is Communist
er.-my No. 1 in Italy.

interfere in Itals domestic af
fairs. What she has done is to
let it be known that factories in
which the Communists have un
ion control will get no contracts

Back in 1948 it was a serious
threat. It had come out of
World War II strong in mem
bership and prestige because of
its partisan activities against the
Fascists and the Nazis.
The whole world watched the
1948 Italian parliamentary elec
tion. Had the Communists won
and many feared they would
it would have been a serious
business for the West.
Created Riot Squads
Scelba, stocky, bald, decep
tively smiling, played a big part
in their defeat.
Scelba declared war on the
Communists. He reorganized the
police, motorized them and form
ed the now famous "Celere"
riot squads.
The Communists were fomen
ting disorders all over the coun
try. Scelba's men moved in. It
was not before Scelba's riot
police were waiting wherever
the Communists started any
thing. When in July, 1948, a student
tried to assassinate Communist
Leader Palmiro Togliatti, the
Reds threatened a national re
volt. Scelba packed the streets
of big cities with police. Red
demonstrations were broken up
by force, and the threat petered
out.
Since then, Scelba has fought
the bandits of his native Sicily,
the Monarchists and the Neo
Fascists. But the Communists re
main his favorite enemies.

'Shangri La' To Arrive
At San Diego Station
Alameda, Calif. (U.R) The
aircraft carrier Shangri-La will
arrive at the U. S. Naval Air
station in Alameda tomorrow en
route to San Diego.
The huge carrier was recom
missioned in Bremerton, Wash.,
on Jan. 10 after a 26-month mod
ernization at Puget Sound Naval
shipyard. She received the first
structurally angled flight deck
in the Navy as well as modern,
heavy-duty steam catapults and
an enclosed hurricane bow.
