The National Rifle Associa
tion of America is presenting to
Anderson an exact copy ct the
flint-lock. This was used by our
lV-rebears in both the Revolu
tionary War and the War of
1P12.
The rifle people are holding
their 84th annual meeting in the
capital. Some months back. Maj.
Gen. Merritt A. Edson, USMC.
retired, decided that a suitable
memento for the guest speaker
at the big banquet would be a
flint-lock rifle. Since Edson . is
the executive director of the
National Rifle Association,
everybody agreed.
Expert Craftsman
So the general dropped a line
to Cecil G. Brooks of Lowell, O..
n expert craftsman when it
comes, to building rifles. He told
Brooks to get busy. Brooks
studied up on what went into a
flint-lock rifle and got busy.
The finished product, which
cost a pretty penny and is some
thing to catch the eye of any
lover of firearms, is now ihined
up and redy with a silver
'Presented to" imbedded in the
Ohio curly maple wood stock.
Brooks worked hard to recap
ture the past. The rifle he has
lecreated precisely in the best
tradition of early America, meas
ures 62 3-8 inches overall and
has a 46 2-3 inch octagonal bar
rel rifled with eight grooves. Its
bore measures 0.37 inch.
Nothing is more tr?ditionally
American than the flint, or the
Pennsylvania or "Kentucky" ri
fle used by the men who fought
their way west, tamed same,
cleared the land of buffalo and
staked claims in the good earth.
McKay Defends Policy
On Partnership Power
Washington (U.R) Interior
Secretary Douglas McKay Wed
nesday defended the Eisenhower
administration's "p a r tnership"
policy for development of power
projects as " a positive program
. . . that will make a valuable
contribution to the power supply
of the country."
In a requested appearance be
fore the House Interior commit
tee McKay also said:
1. The administration has no
preference between private util
ity companies and governmental
agencies in selecting "partners"
for development of projects.
2. The government will con
tinue to use power rates of fed
eral projects as an informal
"yardstick" to indicate what pri
vate rates might be.
Democratic committee mem
bers questioning him in turn at
tacked the partnership policy.
Republican members told McKay
they agreed with it.
Connecticut has 2,000,000 in
habitants and about 2.000,000
acres of forest land in its area
of 3,202,100 total acres.

$75,000 Grant Given

grant has been awarded the
Science Research Institute at
Oregon State college oy the U.S.
Public Health Service for a study
of how sugars are burned in liv
ing cells, it was announced
Wednesday.
It is hoped the research will
provide new information on such
diseases as sugar diabetes and
cancer.
The institute wall receive $15,
000 for each of the next five
years. The studies will be con
ducted by Dr. Vernon H. Chelde
lin; institute director, and Dr.
Tsoo E. King, associate professor
of biochemistry.
They will study the manner in
which sugars are burned for en-:
ergy in living cells of a wide
range of organisms, including
bacteria, insects, smut organisms
and anima,tissue. Normal and
diseased cells will be compared.

of The Mail Tribune yesterday.

'Smelly Deal' Victim

Abel, 24, who complained of get
ting a "smelly deal" on a. drunk
driving conviction earlier, re
leased a live skunk Wednesday
in the suburban Roseville po
lice station.
"I understand that if you get
bit by an animal you have to
bring it in," he explained with a
grin.

Commercial teachers of four
Rogue valley high schools were
guests at a meeting of the Nation
al Office Managers association
held this week at the Medford
hotel. Theme of the meeting was
commercial education and busi
ness. The guests included Mrs. Irma
Parr and Miss Inez Freeman,
Talent high school; Roy Lund
borg, Medford high school; Miss
Martha Boshears, Crater high
school, and Walter Nelson,
Grants Pass high school.
Featured speaker at the meet
ing was John Pletsch, president
of the Jackson County Chamber
of Commerce, who discussed the
economic future of the Rogue
valley. A question and answer
period followed his talk.
A report was submitted by the
NOMA nominating committee.
Election of officers is scheduled
at the group's next meeting.
There still are about 45,000
one-room school houses in the
United' States, but because of
consolidation trends, they are
disappearing now at a rate of
about 10 every day.

of flint was clamped between the

flint scraped against the face of
a steel battery making a shower
of sparks which fell into the
priming powder burned fast
through the barrel vent to touch
off the powder charge and send,
the bullet through the barrel.
