A U.S. Army court marshal has
convicted Pvt. William A. Ver
dine of being absent without
leave.
But it withheld a prison sen
tence on grounds he had suffered
enough in six years of Commun
ist captivity.
The court martial merely sen
tenced the 28-year-old soldier
from Starks. La., to forfeit $66
of his pay each month for six
months.
Verdine received his sentence
impassively. He maintained the
same outward composure as
when he detailed the beatings,
torture, starvation and slave
labor he received from the time
of his arrest in East Germany in
February, 1949, until last Jan
uary. Verdine had pleaded innocent
to charges that he went AWOL.
He was returned by the Rus
sians last Jan. 20, almost six
vears after he disappeared Feb.
3, 1949.
Verdine told the court he
"wandered-' into the Soviet zone
of Germany and began a life of
"hell" that ended in a slave labor
camp in Arctic Russia.

members of the local Civil Ser
vice board, according to an an
nouncement today by Chester
Silliman, examiner in charge of
the local board.
The appointments were made
by John M. Young, director of
the 11th U.S. Civil Service re
gion, with headquarters in Seat
tle. Other -members of the local
board are Boyce Kellogg, Wil
liam Rose and Sue Fredenburg,
all of the post office staff, and
LeRoy E. Marcoft, of the Crater
Late National Park service.

belief that the disability com
monly called "chronic arthritis"
or "chronic rheumatism" is, in
most cases of more than one
years duration, not inflamma
tion, not infection and not reten
tion of by-products of faulty me
tabolism, but simply physical
degeneration of joint tissues, due
to nutritional deficiency.
Whether you do your morning
rolls (somersaults, as I called 'em
before Young Bill went to col
lege) or not, you ought to know
what degeneration means.

concerned with physical, medi

atomic-powered submarine, USS
Nautilus, says the huge $50,000,
000 craft had successfully passed
all its trials.
The Nautilus, he said, had
traveled more than 3,000 miles
during 319 hours and 32 min
utes under nuclear power, had
made 69 dives and had spent 92
hours submerged.
Wilkinson said" we have now
completed all builder's sea trials,
including the test dives to deep
submergence depth and full
power operation of the propul
sion plant both surfaced and
submerged."
The next step, before the
Nautilus becomes a Navy ship
of the line, he said, would be a
demonstration for the Navy's
Board of Inspection and Survey.
Some trials already made will be
repeated, plus a few new ones.
After that, corrections will be
made by the builder and it will
be turned over to the submarine
fleet.

Good Fire Record Set
In 1954, Spaur Reports
Salem (U.R) Forest fires on
lands under the jurisdiction of
the State- Forestry department
and is cooperating forest pro
tective associations during 1954
totaled 628 with a burned acre
age limited to 2,231 acres, State
Forester George Spaur said to
day. This was the second straight
year that the loss from forest
fires has been almost negligible,
Spaur said. The record for 1953
was 873 fires with 1712 acres
of forest land burned over.
Only 456 fires in 1954 were
man-caueed. The rest were from
lightning.
