Repeniani Killer
Given Probation
On Long-Ago Crime

West Virginia judge Wednesday
freed on probation a repentant
California vineyard worker who
admitted he shot a men to death
here 34 years ago.
Vincenzo Pennino. 65, Stock
ton, Calif., wept when Circuit
Judge J. J. P. O'Brien sentenced
him to one to five years in prison
for voluntary manslaughter.
But after hearing a long ac
count of the man's life, O'Brien
ordered him realesed on two
years' probation and gave him
the choice of returning to Cali
fornia or living with a brother
in York, Pa.
Pennino, who speaks no Eng
lish, indicated he wanted to re
turn to the West Coast, Sheriff
Thomas Boyd said.
Told of Killing
Arrested on a murder charge
after he was overheard telling a
friend in a tavern that he shot
Paul Lucia in an argument on
Feb. 4, 1921, Pennino was ex
tradited to West Virginia to
tand trial.
Authorities agreed to reduce
the charge after learning of
Pennino's exemplary life since
the slaying, and he pleaded
guilty to voluntary manslaugh
ter at a hearing here March 15.
His arrest reunited him with
his brother, Peter, 61, who
agreed to post the S500 proba
tionary bond set by the court.
The brothers met for the first
time in 36 years after Vincenzo
was jailed here earlier this
month.

New School Insurance

ance rates for school properties
to go into effect April 1, which
will mean a reduction of 40 to
45 per cent in school fire insur
ance premiums, have been
approved by State Insurance
Commissioner Robert B. Taylor.
The actual decrease in rate
will depend upon construction
changes made since an individ
ual school was last rated, Taylor
Tjointed out. He said the Oregon
Insurance Rating bureau and
his department had tried to re
lease the reduced rates at a time
when It would help in figuring
fire insurance costs in forth
coming school budgets.

Seven-Foot Tusk
Found in Oregon
Umatilla, Ore. (U.R) What
may be the seven-foot tusk of a
prehistoric hairy mammoth has
been unearthed by a truck driv
er in a gravel pit near here.
Robert Atterbury made the
strange find while hauling grav
el from the state-owned pit Sat
urday. The tusk had been brok
en into three pieces by a power
shovel working some 50 or 60
feet beneath ground surface.
The tusk was removed by At
tebury and friends and tentative
ly identified by Ray Spangle, a
Pendleton barber and rock ex
pert. Spangle has advised Atte
bury to send pictures and de
scriptions of the fossil to Dr.
Arnold Shotwell, curator of the
University of Oregon natural
history museum at Eugene.
Attebury was helped in re
moving the speciman by his fa
ther, Roy, Wallace Ralston and
W. R. Nugent. The men hope Dr.
Shotwell will be able to identify
the tusk positively as coming
from the hairy mammoth, a crea
ture that roamed the plains of
eastern Oregon 25,000 years ago.

the works for autumn. Laraine
Day has filmed a sample po
gram of "Kelly." a female ver
sion of "Medic." Producer John
Guedel is preparing a series
about psychiatrists. It will not
be called "Couch" however, he
says.

Miner promises that "Brief
case" will not feature a Sergeant
Friday or a Dr. Styner groaning
"I am an attorney . . ." The new
series will have no regular star.
The producer also plans "Fron
tier," a documentary western,
and "Challenge," dramas based
on historical decisions.
Hitchcock on TV
CBS-TV has three adventure
series in the works, "Hart of
Honolulu," "Mighty O" and
"Yankee Privateer." Famed sus
pense director. Alfred Hitchcock
will add a mystery series to tele
vision next fall.
But situation comedies are
falling by the wayside. Five have
folded within a year and the
fate of others hangs by a slim
option. "Duffy's Tavern," "I
Married Joan," "That's My Boy,"
"Willy," and "Honestly Celeste"
expired.
"Mr. and Mrs. North" and
"My Little Margie" have lost
their sponsors. The Mickey
Rooney show and "Amos and
Andy" have stopped shooting.
The Ray Milland series and
"Halls of Ivy," according to in
dustry experts, are in danger of
being dropped.
"I Love Lucy," which started
the situation comedy cycle,
changed sponsors for next year.
This year' Lucy held her high
rating by changingthe format to
involve a cross-country trip.

proved a. $25,000,0,00 strike
fund, the largest in the union's
history.
The fund would be raised by
tripling the present monthly
dues of $2.50. The additional $5
increase would stop when the
fund goal was reached and start
again at $1 a month when the
smount dropped below $20,000,
000. A stormy 10-hour debate pre
ceded approval of the- fund as
delegates split over methods of
disbursing the money collected.
The final version of the' fund's
operation was drafted for action
after administration of the fund
by "need" rather than by "right"
passed by a narrow margin.
Then the strike fund received
almost unanimous approval.
The prolonged debate post
poned action on the collective
bargaining platform until later
this week, probably Thursday.
Indian Bureau Gets
Tribal Decision Job
Washington U.P.) The Bu
reau of Indian Affairs will take
over the .task of determining
what members of the Klamath
Indian tribe are entitled to a
share in the tribal property.
Secretary Douglas McKay's of
fice said this action was taken
after consultation with leaders
of Oregon's Klamath tribe.
Under legislation enacted Aug.
13, 1954, the tribe was given six
months to prepare a roll of mem
bers entitled to a share of tribal
property. A roll was submitted
and certified by the tribe by the
Feb. 13 deadline, but .later the
enrollment committee withdrew
its certification, leaving the task
to the Interipr Department.
The law approved last August
provides for elimination of all
special trust and service rela
tionships between the Klamath
tribe and the government on or
before Aug. 13, 1958. It specifies
that the interior secretary shall
provide a list of members en
titled to share in the property
if the tribe failed to do so in the
six-month period.
