Brando, My, '(Q)n the Waterfront' Win Oscars
Hollywood U.R) Marlon
Brando, a three-time loser in the
annual battle ior Oscars, won
the motion picture Academy
Award Thursday night for the
best male performance in 1954.
Grace Kelly, a fellow New
Yorker who has been in the
movies only a year, was given
the nod over veteran Judy Gar
land as the best actress.
It was a great night for their
city, too. "On The Waterfront,"
a film about waterfront crime
and violence which was made in
New York, won eight Oscars,
tying the record set by "Gone
With The Wind" in 1939. .
"On The Waterfront's" star,
Brando, finally collected his Os
car for his portrayal of a brood
ing dock worker. His girl friend
In the movie, Eva Marie Saint,
won the best supporting actress
award.
Sentiment "Not Involyed"
Miss Kelly won the best ac
tress award for her role as a
discouraged wife in "The' Coun
try Girl." Edmund O'Brien, the
press agent of "The Barefoot
Contessa," was given an Oscar
as best supporting actor.
All four players are first time
Oscar winners.
The usually casual Brando,
who hadn't attended previous
Academy award presentations,
ran to the stage of the Pantages
theater to acept a gold statuette
from Bette Davis. He was so
moved he forgot his thank you
speech and his Hand shook as
he held the statuette.
Before the event, Judy Gar
land, who staged a comeback in
"A Star Is Born," and Bing
Crosby, one of Hollywood's best
liked citizens and star of "The
Country Girl," were hot favor
ites to win. Miss Garland was
rushed to the hospital to have a
baby ahead of schedule Tuesday

"On The Waterfront" also won
for best art direction, automat
ically giving it a set decoration
plaque,, technically its ninth
award. But the film; shot entire
ly on location, had no sets so
academy officials were uncer
tain as to who should receive
the plaque.
Garbo Gets Award
Bob Hope, master of cere
monies for the event, kept the
crowd roaring with his quips,
such as, "This is Hollywood's
biggest give-away program. The
secret word tonight is 'shucks'."
"The losers get monogrammed
do-it-yourself suicide kits," Hope
promised.
An unusual special award was
voted by the Academy's board of
directors to Greta Garbo for
"her unforgettable" perform
ances. Special awards also went to
Danny Kaye for his united na
tions film, "Assignment Chil
dren," and to Jon Whitely and
Vincent Winter, as best juvenile
actors in "The Little Kidnapers"
(English).
Oscar during her long and illus-;
trious career and the Academy '
decided to correct the oversight, j
"Gate of Hell," a Japanese 1
film, was voted the best foreign 1
language movie of the year. ;
Walt Disney accepted two
awards and his studio netted two j
more, which runs his total to

It's been brand new ever since a
kindly judge pulled him out of
the human swamp of the city's
skid row and cleaned him up.
The latest addition to the staff
at the library is William G.
Wood, 65, once an authority on
contract law, once a teacher at
Kent College of Law, and once
a skid-row alcoholic. Now he has
the new job at the library. Now
he works amid the kind of sur
roundings in which he was edu
cated and among the men with
whom he once professionally as
sociated. "It's another step on the road
back," Wood said today.
He is neat in a new suit. He
has a set of false teeth which he
didn't have Jan. 23, when he
turned up, a derelict on the skids
of alcoholism, in Municipal
Judge Hyman Feldman's munic
ipal court.
That appearance in court
started him on the road back.
Feldman by questioning learned
his background. He told him he
woulrl give him a iob at S5 a
day, after Wood had successfully
defended another derelict from
skid row to show Feldman that
he "still had it."
The change was slow but it
never halted. First it was a clean
shirt, then a topcoat someone
gave him, then some dentures to
replace lost ones, then a hearing
aid, a new suit and a new hat.
"It thrills me to death," said
Feldman, when improvement
began to set in.
Other attorneys rallied around
to give Wood a hand.
For a time Wood, who blamed
the start of his excessive drink
ing on family problems, was a
little reluctant to say whether
he thought he had licked his
problem.
But he's been showing up reg
ularly for work.
"I like this job so far," he
said.
"So far it's fine."
"And I haven't had a drink
since I left skid row."

Ruling on NSF Law
Salem (U.R) A 1949 law re
garding drawing insufficient
fund 'checks was ruled uncon
stitutional by the Oregon Su
preme Court Wednesday because
it did not stipulate whether the
crime was a felony or a misde
meanor. The court's ruling upheld the
action of Circuit Judge H. K.
Hanna of Jackson county in dis
missing a felony indictment
charging Walter Pirkey , with
drawing NSF checks with intent
to defraud.
The court's opinion said the
statute proposed to vest discre
tion in the grand jury or the
committee magistrate as . to
whether the accused ,-hall be
proceeded against for a misde
meanor or a felony.

The court expressed no opin;
ion about the other portions of

of the entire problem is indi
cated." Salem (U.R) The Oregon Su
preme Court Wednesday held
that a 1947 legislative act. vest
ing in the state the exclusive
right to regulate the speed of
railroad trains in cities of less
than 100,000, supersedes a 1929
Salem city ordinance.
The railroad had recovered a
judgment of S665 for damages
to its locomotive which struck
a Consolidated Freight ways
truck. The truck had stopped al
most on the track at 12th and
Slate sts. here, immediately in
front of an approaching freight
train.
Consolidated contended the
train was traveling in excess of
the limits set forth in the city
ordinance. The Supreme Court,
in an opinion by Chief Justice
Harold J. Warner, affirmed the
trial court decree.
