ONCE IS USUALLY ENOUGH Eva Gabor, of the fabulous
sisters, gets a taste of what it will be like working with
these two zany comedians, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis,
as they welcome her to the set in Hoilywood. The boys
never have the same leading lady twice, mainly because
once is all the girls can take. Eva says she hopes to be the
exception.

Around Hollywood
By ALINE MOSBY
United Press Correspendeiit
(Editor's? Nole: Th last of
a twa-part series en one of
Hollywood's most unusual
stars, Jennifer Jones.) '
Hollywood (U.R) Jennifer
Jones was an overnight failure
in her debut on Broadway last
December, and ' today she de
scribed the experience as "The
real failure of my life."
The one-time brilliant career
of the actres, originally master
minded by her producer-husband,
David O. Selzriick, . has
been quiet in recent years. Her
last two films, "Beat the Devil"
and "Indescretion of an Ameri
can Wife", were unusual, artis
tic triumphs but not general
hits, possibly because of luke
warm promotion. Three months
ago she starred on Broadway in
' Portrait of a Lady," a costume
opus that folded after four days
"It was a personal failure,"
she admitted honestly. "But I
learned from it.
Great Experience
"All my life Ive wanted to
v,ork in the theater. Yes, the
failure was disappointing.
would call it the real failure of
my life, as far as work is con
cerned, but it was also the great
experience of my life.
"I learned a lot. I have no re
grets. At least I did the play,
and the work was satisfying. I
learned what I didn't know.
"It made me realize what this
film business means to me. I en
jcy it even more now. And the
iaiiure did not destroy my
dreams of working in the thea
ter. I hope to go back. Everyone
has ups and downs in this busi
ness," she said with a smile.
"You know, you can go about
a bit smugly here, working in
pictures, in spite of not knowing
anything. I learned more about
people from working in that
play, and I learned something
about myself."
The actress also took a year
off the screen to have a baby,
which made her give up a sched
uled role in "The Country Girl."
Grace Kelly, her replacement.

wished I could have done it, but,
of course, the baby was worth

She now is working in Holly

What is she like?
Some of her coworkers say
she is aloof on the set, yet on
the screen Jennifer Jones re

pressions of some film queens.
She usually withdraws from the
press ("I'm not very good at in
terviews") yet I found her hon
est, talkative and gracious.
When I asked her how many
Oscar nominations she has col
lected, she shrugged, "I really
don't know." She never saw her
self, on the screen until three
years ago. She was forced by
friends to sit down and look at
her 10 years' output. Friends
call her "insecure, and so con

Questions Resumed
In Commies' Trial
Denver AJ.R) The govern
ment has resumed questioning
ot its first witness, former high
ranking Communist party disci
plinarian John E. Lautner, in the
conspiracy trial of seven, west
ern Communists.
- The- defense blocked an at
tempt by government attorneys
to draw Lautner out regardng
his' contacts with Communists in
Canada. But he was allowed to
relate his duties and name more
than a dozen top American Com
munists he dealt with during the
post-war years.
Several persons he named are
listed as co-conspirators with the
seven Reds on triaL and some
already have been convicted
under the Smith Act.
Lautner said that from Sep
tember. 1948, to January, 1950,
when he was expelled by the
Communists, he served on the
National Review Commission.
The commission was the party's
disciplinary arm, Lautner said,
and concentrated on preventing
infiltration . of party ranks by
enemy agents.
The defense argued futilely
that Judge Jean Breitenstein
should not let Lautner testify,
since he was expelled from the
party before the alleged conspir
acies of the seven now on trial
took place.
