From Atomic Blast
Goes Three Ways
Las Vegas (U.R) The stem
of the mushroom cloud resulting
from this morning's "grand
pappy" atomic bomb test, con
taining quantities of radioactive
dirt, veered off in a northerly di
rection. The center section trav
eled south-southwest toward the
Las Vegas vicinity, and the mush
room cap sailed toward the east
at 50 knots.
More than 650 soldiers and 28
Marines crouched in trenches
bout one and three-quarter
miles from blast center as the de
tonation shot up a light of 100
suns and sent a fireball with a
beautiful but horrid purple tinge
boiling outward over an esti
mated radius of a quarter mile.
Although the nature of today's
device was not revealed, the
Atomic Energy Commission said
it was of primary interest to the
Department of Defense, indicat
ing the military was adding ei
ther another weapon to it3 store
house of nuclear weapons or per
fecting one already in the stock
pile.
The soldiers were being taught
they could be dug in at the bot
torn of a six-foot deep trench
close to the blasts which they
might use on any future battle
fields and still emerge unscathed
snd fighting minutes after the
fireball rolls away.
A total of 112 American war
planes, 60 of them flying in
from bases throughout the
United States participated in a
coordinated Air Force, Navy
and Marine mock attack session
in objectives in the shot area.
A large amount of military
material, including field artillery
and ordnance, was exposed to
the blast at distances up to 3,500
yards.
Animals Exposed
In placements at various dis
tances from the blast center
mice took the place of humans in
experiments for exposure to
blast, radiation and heat effects
As soon as radiation reaches a
"safe" level in the area, teams
of AEC hunters will range out
ward from 20 to 100 miles col
lecting specimens of mice, kanga
roo rats and rabbits to be sent
to the UCLA School of Medicine
in Los Angeles to study fallout
effects.
Today's flash was sighted in
Oakland, Calif., 400 miles away;
Salt Lake City and Phoenix, 370
miles distant, and across 3o0
miles into Los Angeles, where
haze hampered vision.
