won't call him
Dr. Bradr names this
time everyone must learn how
to lift, and some ninnyhammers
learn the hard way.
I know, for I'm one of the
aforesaid ninnyhammers. On
non-bowling days, of which,
somehow there are too many, I
take a break about 12:30 the
time when I should be toddling
toward the bowling green and
go out to putter in the patio and
absorb a litle ultraviolet. While
puttering one day I noticed a
young tree springing up under a
stairway leading to a studio. I
bent - over, grasped the shoot
with both hands and yanked on
it. It didn't give. I leaned down,
took a firmer hold and yanked
harder. Yoik is the word for it,
I believe. Several yoiks. The
young tree didn't give but my
sacro-ijiac did.
It took half an hour to get into
the house and into bed. From the
way I felt, it was going to be a
long, painful ... osteopath? I
did have one of the leading phy
sicians of that school I can't re
member whether he called it
"slipped innominate," sacro-iliac
sprain or subluxation. I do re
member that his manipulations,
which I had feared would cause
great pain, were not at all pain
ful. However, the disability and
the extreme tenderness re
mained. Next morning a medical
pactitioner skilled in "needle
surgery" examined me, market
the tender point deep in the loin,
administered a deep injection of
procaine, a local anesthetic. He
waited a while, then told me to
sit up, despite my protests that I
couldn't. Sitting up didn't hurt
me, but I still refused to walk.
Presently, however, I found
walking didn't hurt either and
that was the ,end of my lame
back.
In wartime similar teatment
of spains proved most success
ful. Immediate injection of pro
caine into the most tender area
about "a sprained ankle, for in
stance, enable the patient to con
tinue walking about and remain
on duty instead of being Inval
ided several days. Gave better
functional results too.
When you lift anything from
floor or ground, squat down,
keeping your back straight. If
you bend over to pick up some
thing, even though it may not
be heavy, you put your sacro
iliac "joint" in jeopardy. This
"joint" or junction is where the
keystone of the spine (the sac
rum) is attached to the wing
(ilium) of the pelvic or hip bone
(innominate) on either side.
