Radioactive FalDouf
ostly Unfounded; Compared to Soot From Furnace
Washington U.R) A busi
r.essman complained that fallout
from atomic weapons tests in
Nevada was making his employ
ees sick. A taxi driver said his
tires were getting sticky from
radio-activity, Moscow blamed
droughts in Russia on atomic
fallout from America.
Fallout didn't do any of these
things. But such complaints are
an indication of how the menace
of fallout, a deadly by-product
of nuclear explosions, is con
cerning people here and abroad.
Las Vegas (U.R) Atomic
Energy commission weather
experts were scheduled to con
vene today to determine
whether the often - pdstponed
"granddad iy" shot of Ihe 1955
nuclear test series would be
rescheduled for tomorrow.
The blast has been post
poned since March 14 because
of unfavorable weather. A sub
stitute, smaller air burst may
be detonated tomorrow, the
AEC said.
There's no secret about what
atomic fallout is, and there is a
certain amount of information
available about what it does.
Atomic fallout might be com
pared with soot from a hot fur
nace being drawn up a chimney.
Somewhere the soot has to come
down.
Lighter Soot, Lighter Damage
By the time soot settles to
earth it has colled off so much
that about' the only damage it
can do is smudge a wash drying
on the line.
But if a heavy cinder is sucked
up through a chimney it can
cause real trouble. It may fall
back to earth while it is still hot
and start a fire.

the "target," a theoretical fleet

NO CURE ALL
"We have no cure-all for slick,

root is still capable of creating
hair and we can perform what
seems ot be a miracle."
There is one thing Safranski

immediate attention.
HAIR FOR LIFETIME
"If clients follow our direc

they finish the course, there is

of a few simple rules."

Heavier Dust is Dangerous
But atomic explosions also can
suck up heavier dust, like hot
cinders. This happens when an
H bomb is exploded so close to
earth its fireball scoops out a
crater in the ground. The dust
that goes up is heavier and there
fore it falls back to earth pretty
fast.
This fallout settles to the
ground before it has had a
chance to "cool," or lose its ra
enemv bomber formation. A sin
gle plane would be wiped out
even if the missile missed its
target by as much as one-half
mile.

Cornell university scientists

The researchers have found
that measurements made by in

dioactivity. And this kind of
fallout is dangerous. It can kill.
The Atomic Energy commis
sion disclosed recently that H
bomb fallout from an explosion
where the fireball touched the
ground can contaminate an area
of 7000 square miles, greater
than the state of Connecticut,
almost as big as Massachusetts
or New Jersey.
For 36 hours after such an ex
plosion, no one in the region
could be certain of staying alive.
The agencies did not announce
a date for the stratospheric ex
plosion. Earlier reports indicat
ed such a device would be deto
nated during the 1955 test series.
"Because of their great power,
atomic aid defense weapons will
greatly increase our ability to
repel any enemy air attack," the
joint announcement said. "The
employment of such weapons for
air defense purposes will en
hance the efectiveness of inter
ceptor aircraft squadrons and
ground based air defense units
in stopping enemy bombers short,
of our cities and other strategic
targets."
Tests Last Week
The announcement did not
specify an air-to-air attack on an
"enemy" formation, but only
last Friday the AEC and the De
fense department for the first
time fired a non-nuclear high
explosive shot in a full-scale
test. A B36 flying six miles
above the Nevada range fired
the missile into a pattern of
eight smoke trails 1,000 feet be
low. The trails represented a
fleet of "enemy" bombers.
This was termed a "calibra
tion" shot preparatory to a full
scale firing of a high altitude,
nuclear tipped air-to-air missile.

The greatest danger would be
from fallout downwind from the
center of the explosion. Like
soot, atomic dust is carried
whichever way the wind is blow
ing. Downwind from an atomic
explosion you would have to be
at least 220 miles away to be
sure you wouldn't be killed by
fallout.
This is why protection against
fallout is becoming an impor
tant phase of civil defense plan
ning in America.

By WALTER MATTILA
Mail Tribune Special Writer
Helsinki, Finland (By Air
Mail) The newspapers' role in
a major labor dispute in Scan
dinavia is much different from
that in the United States.
Sweden has just escaped the
threat of the worst strike in its
history. Yet only Communist
press took a strong editorial
stand, denouncing the employers
that might well have been bor
rowed from American "strike
language."
Comment in conservative, lib
eral and labor papers was mod
erate and all expressed hope that
Swedish horse sense would find
the way to solve the problem
of the high wage demands made
by pulp and paper workers.
At no time was the union as
sailed as reckless and unreason
able. This charge could hardly
have been made with justice, for
the union and its superior, the
Swedish labor federation known
as LO, has a staff of economists
working on all proposals. This
activity is normal in Scandi
navian wage disputes.
Swedish editors and reporters
acknowledged their labor report
ing is not thorough. They did
not deny that so-called advance
stories might have been more
numerous and significant. Sev
eral writers complained that the
Swedish public did not know the
meaning of the word "lockout"
the strike of employers. As a
rule labor matters get little
space in their press.
When the Employers Associa
tion issued a warning that a
general lockout might occur
the pulp and paper workers had
the full support of LO some
I newspapers criticized the warn
(Ul
ing as too disturbing. Some com
ment indicated that the em
loyers were suspected of trying
to frighten the public in favor
of employers.
But all save the Communist
press was surprisingly circum
spect in presenting strike news
with almost judicial impartiality
and calm. Nor did the other
Scandinavian newspapers play
up the Finnish labor situation
except in matter of fact reports.
There was however ah air of
gravity in the accounts which
intimated the Scandinavian
press feared the Finnish strike
might develop into a political
crisis involving Russia.
No newspapers in Scandina
via, not even in Finland, are
making anything of the railroad
strikers handling freight bound
for Russia but not touching
freight from Russia once it
reaches the Finnish border.
Large quantities are said to be
dumped off trains returning to
Russia.

In general the press coverage
of labor disputes in Scandinavia
is a cool summary of facts. Lit
tle space is devoted to a situa
tion which is still hatching.
Criticism of the various Scandi
navian governments all Labor
except in Finland is particu
larly temperate in labor mat
ters. Scandinavian labor does
not have Labor members in par
liament hog tied. They appear
to be less exposed to pressure
groups of labor and management
than is the case in the United
States where a labor legislator
rarely votes against union poli
cies. The prestige of all three prin
ciples in Scandinavian labor dis
putes, management, unions and
the government appears to be
elevated to the point that edi
torial sniping at its savagest
must observe decorum. This in
itself tends to give an air of
moderation, reasonableness and
good sense in a showdown,
knockout and dragout battle.
