16-Year-Old Stowaway Vows He Will Npt
Return Home; Will Geet Talk from Mother

Gardena, Calif., high school
student who stowed aboard a
'Hawaii-bound freighter vowed
-Saturday he would run away
again if forced to return home.
Donald Allen Prichard, 16,
was arraigned Friday on the
"technical charge" of being a
juvenile delinquent but he quick
ly captured the court's sympathy.
Prichard told the court he had
'no particular reason for wanting
"to come to Honolulu and that he

about "pineapples and the happy
life" in Hawaii.

In Gardena, the boy's mother,
Mrs. Virgil Padgett, said she was
cheered to hear that he was safe,
but that when he comes home
she is going to have "a mother-to

She won't try to paddle him,
she said. It would be silly any
way. He's nearly 17 now and
bigger than I am and a lot braver,

The stowaway was taken to
the City and County Emergency
hospital Friday night for a phy
sical checkup. Cassiday said the
boy "appeared to be quite weak
and kept stumbling around."
The checkup revealed Prich
ard was all right but was weak
because of the lack of nourish
ment. The boy told authorities
he lived on beans, soup and water
for eight days.
Offer Home for Boy
Cassiday said he has received
several calls from Honolulu resi
dents offering to take the boy
into their homes.
The probation officer said the
boy told him he and his step
father could not get along. He
said the family has been living
in house trailers for the past few
years, moving around much of
the time. Prichard said he would
run away from home if he was
forced to return.
The student told Cassiday he
climbed into a navy ambulance
on a San Pedro, Calif., dock on
March 17. He said he knew the
vehicle would be loaded aboard
a Matson freighter bound for
Hawaii.
During the dark hours in the
ambulance the boy kept a brief
diary but had to give it up fin
ally when his candle supply ran
out.
Portland Girl Drowns
In Flooded Basement
Portland (U.R) A 10-year-old
Portland girl drowned in a flood
ed basement excavation here
Saturday while playing with two
other girls.
Joyce Ann Clark, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Madden
Clark of Portland was throw
ing sticks and stones into the
muddy excavation when she
slipped and fell in. Police said
the hole contained about six feet
of water.
Ail Workshop for
Teachers To Open
On Inservice art workshop
will be held in Medford at the
senior high school cafeteria be
ginning Tuesday, March 29 and
continuing for three days.
Classes begin at 3:30 p.m. and
continue to 9:30 p.m. with an
hour from 6 to 7 p.m. for dinner.
Medford schools will serve a
meal at a nominal cost.
Instructor for the course will
be Miss Cleo Heller, demonstra
tor for Binney Smith and com
pany. Miss Heller holds a mas
ter's degree in art from Univer
sity of Southern California and
a bachelor's degree from UCLA.
She has had 15 years experience
in classroom teaching and su
pervision in schools both elemen
tary and high schools. Various
materials will be used in the
"learn by doing" workshop in
cluding crayola, chalk, finger
paint,) powder paint, tempera,
water colors, papier mache, and
clayola. The course runs for 15
hours.
No Observers
Pre-registration was made
earlier in the year. The class is
limited to approximately 50
teachers. No observers but ad
ministrators and supervisors are
permitted. Certificates of com
pletion will be given to teachers
attend every session and com
pleting the 15 hours. Teachers
are requested to bring scissors, a
large can, newspapers, paint
cloths and two large paint
brushes the first day.

ment debated today whether to
step in and try to get the presses
rolling in the four-c"ay-old Lon
don newspaper strike.
Leaders of the Newspaper
Proprietors Association and the
Strike Committee held separate
meetingst his morning but nei
ther side made any move to re
sume negotiations.
American newspapers pub
lished in Europe continued nor
mal shipments of copies to Lon
don. The New York Herald
Tribune edition published in

The Manchester Guardian was

A walkout of 700 electricians
and mechanics has stopped pub
lication of London's three after

Airmen Escape Crash
Of Army Helicopter
Eugene (U.R) Two Ft. Lewis,
Wash., airmen escaped death yes
terday when their Army heli
copter crashed one mile east of
Saginaw near here.
State police at Eugene said the
aircraft apparently ran out of
gas. It was one of four "egg
beaters" operating in the area.
The other three planes landed
to assist the crashed plane.
The copter was heavily dam
aged. Pilot of the plane was 1st Lt.
R. A. Johnspn. His passenger
has been tentatively identified
as a Pfc. McKindley. Both men
are of Ft. Lewis.
30 Snorting Brafima Bulls
Round Up by Policeman
Phoenix, Ariz. U.P.) Har
ried authorities Saturday round
ed up the last of some 30 snort
ing Brahma bulls that broke out
of a railroad pen and turned city
streets into a rodeo arena Friday
night.
Several persons were injured,
one seriously. Two vehicles were
damaged, and fences, lawns,
shrubs and gardens were torn up
before police corralled the
beasts.
Three of the bulls were shot to
death by officers. Police switch
boards were flooded with com
plaints from angry citizens
chased from the streets by the
excited bulls.
Frances Rhodes, 15, an Indian
girl, suffered serious head in
juries and was under treatment
at Phoenix Indian Hospital.
James Legg, 72, of Phoenix, suf
fered . minor injuries when he
hopped over a fence to avoid a
charging bull.

reported an angry bull butted
his car when he attempted to get
a picture of the animal.
