his shoulders and he wore a

They passed and Pope turned

he had been that face before.
But the man had vanished.

Famous Case
Now this story has become a
postscript to one of the most
celebrated cases in the annals of
the inexplicable. On Dec. 16,
1897, William Terriss, father of
the great Ellaline Terriss and
himself one of Britain's leading
actors, had chuckled at the pre
monition of an understudy that
he would be murdered.
The understudy Levison Lane,
had been so disturbed by a
dream in which he saw Terriss
dying -of stab wounds inside the
Adelphi with the cast grouped
around him, that he insisted on
telling the company about it.
He said he had an eerie feel
ing that death had become Ter
riss companion.
The star only laughed and an
other member of the company
said:
"All understudies dream the
star is murdered."
As he left the theater after
the matinee, Terriss was con
fronted by a bit player upset be
cause he had been dropped from
the company. Terris promised
he would take him on again for
the next play and gave him some
coins. With the money, the extra
bought a butcher knife.
The Stabbing
That evening, as Terriss and a
friend he had met at dinner ap
proached his private door to the
theater in Bull Inn Yard, the
extra sprang from the shadows
and stabbed him.
The friend helped Terris into
the theater. There he died, with
the cast grouped around him,
exactly as the understudy had
dreamed.
The surname of Terriss' com
panion was actually Death!
When Pope heard this bizarre
tale, he went back to Bull' Inn
Yard. The spot at which he had
seen the stranger vanish was
exactly where Terris used to
enter the Adelphi by nis private
door.
"I looked up an old portrait,"
Pope said. 'There is no doubt a
ghost the ghost of Terriss.".
