SPRING IS HERE! The first day of spring (Mar. 21) finds
Roberta Browne popping out with sun umbrella and bath
ing suit on a San Francisco beach. Roberta was dubbed
Queen of Redwood Empire (why not empress?) by resort
owners for the occasion. If you can get your eyes past
Roberta, that's the Golden Gate Bridge in the background.

line the awect knowledge I
possess.
That she I love la mine.
All nature throbs with happlnesa
And wears a face divine.
The woods seem greener than
they were.
The skies are brighter blue.
The stars shine clearer and the
air
Lets finer sunlight through.
Charles Mackay.
Hoagy Carmichael is still re
ceiving about $14,000 a year
from "just one of his hit songs,
"Stardust." How right that man
was who said, "Write songs,
young man. They will keep you
in your old age." Maybe I'll
write a few songs to keep me in
my old age just in case my racing
system fails to provide me with
a luxurious living.
Heart Throbs
At what age does a man have
the most sex appeal? Joan Craw
ford appears to take the view
that middleaged men have the
most potent attraction for fe
males. Asked to select the fifteen
"sexiest male film stars," Joan
included In her list Clark Gable,
Spencer Tracy, Humphrey Bo
gart, Gary Cooper and Bing
Crosby. I believe all these gen
tlemen are over 50. Also on
Joan's list of "sexiest stars" are
John Wayne, James Stewart,
Cary Grant and Robert Taylor.
All these men are crowding 45,
Passing By
Charlie Berns. The gay gour
met. Guiding spirit of Jack and
Charlie's Twenty-One Club, one
of the world's most elegant eat
eries. The charming and smartly
attired lady by Charlie's side is
his clever wife, Molly, whose ad
vice and suggestions are said to
have been a major factor in the
Twent-One Club having achieved
and maintained so much of that
thing called "class."
Girl Friday
That brilliant career woman,
Corinne Thrasher, has been
Henry Luce's secretary for 22
years. That's a long time to have
been the secretary of the same
man. Also a long time for a man
to be able to keep the same sec
retary. Wonder if it is the Girl
Friday record.
Asking
Queries from clients: Q. Is
it a fact that Rudolph Valentino
introduced the tango to this
country? I claim he only popu
larized tnat dance by his per
formance of it in the film "The
Four Horsemen of the Apoca
lypse." A. The tango was intro
duced to the country in 1914 in
a countrywide tour by the dance
team of Rudolph Valentino and
Bonnie Glass.
Rebellion
Size of drink served in New
York bars continues to shrink.
In some places it is five-eighths
of an ounce. A drinkers' rebellion
has resulted. Only 30 per cent
of strong drink sold in New York
is sold over the City's 9,000 bars.
Seventy per cent is sold in the
2,000 package stores of the town.
The home made highball in New
York averages two ounces, and
costs about one-fourth as much
as the midget highball served in
the bars.
Record
A baby every year for twenty-
six years of marriage. Twenty-six
blessed events in twenty -six
years. Never a year has passed
since she became a bride that she
nasnt had a baby. That's the
record of Mrs. Marie Cyr of Fort
Kent, Maine. It is the world's
record for consistent child bear
ing. Mrs. Cyr, now 43, married
when 17. Nineteen of her chil
dren are living.
