rived in Britain today to a wild
welcome from singing and weep
ing women. And visiting the spot
from which the Mayflower sail
ed he declared, "I'm a pilgrim
father in reverse.
"I've been a little homesick
for England ever since I left it,"
the American evangelist said.
"There is something in this coun
try that gets right down deep.
There is something here that
digs a place in a man's heart."
Hundreds Chant Hymn
A crowd of hundreds, mainly
women and girls, chanted the
hymn "This Is My Story" and
many wept as Graham came
ashore from the liner Liberte
waving his hat from the bow of
a tender and shouting "God
bless you."
Police crush barriers held
back crowds. Mothers held their
babies aloft to see the young
preacher who achieved near-phenomenal
success with a London
revival last year and now has re
turned for a six-week revival in
Scotland.
He opens in Glasgow Monday.
The week of May 14-21 he will
be back in London to preach at
"Wembly Stadium, the biggest in
Britain.

is the largest mid-season book
issued by the company since

chases. About half the book is de
voted to wearing apparel, the
remainder to housewares, furni
ture, household appliances, ra
dio, television, auto needs, floor
coverings, curtains and kitchen
cabinets.
Taxation of Timber
Subject of Meeting
County assessor and state tax
commission representatives will
meet with timber owners at
7:30 p.m. today for a discussion
of timber taxation, appraisal
and equalization.
The meeting will be in the
courthouse auditorium.

military demands for petroleum
products in a new global con
flict probably would be even
greater than in World War II.
For one thing, American Air
Force and Navy jets use fuels
based on gasoline, rather than
kerosene like the British. And
even kerosene comes from the
same source as gasoline crude
oil so that its large-scale use
would indirectly affect gasoline
supplies.
The experts said jets eat a lot
more fuel than the propeller
driven jobs of the last war. And
they said it takes still more gas
oline and oil to drive cargo
planes,, tanks, trucks, gun car
riers, ships, and the .thousands
of other fuel-operated imple
ments of war.
Eventual Conversion
It's going to be a long time,
for example, before the Navy
converts to atom power. It's
Republicans Claim
Tax Cut Plan Licked
Washington (U.R) Republi
cans claim they have licked a
Democratic plan to cut income
taxes $20 a person next year.
Democrats refused to concede de
feat but wouldn't make any vic
tory claims either.
The tax cut was approved by
the House and rejected by the
Senate as an amendment to a
corporation-excise tax extension
bill. Its fate rested today with a
Senate-House Conference Com
mittee. The conferees must come up
with agreement before April 1
to prevent a scheduled drop in
taxes on corporations and on
liquors, cigarettes, gasoline and
automobiles.

Officials said distributing gas

power and equipment. In the
event of a full-scale war, they
said it would be advisable to
shift as much of this to defense
projects as possible, again cut
ting into civilian supplies.
The Defense Department
spokesman said it would take
some days to put a new ration
ing program into effect after a
declaration of national emer
gency. During this time civilians
would be able to get supplies
from normal sources.

like they probably will be using
at that new housing develop
ment called Sharpstown here in
Houston."
It turned out that Mort is still
in there pitching, but now he is
is a bigger game. He is vice
president of a bomb shelter man
ufacturing company which dear
ly loves his name and reputa
tion. Mort has the developers of
the new $400,000,000 housing
project interested in something
that may add up to a bomb cel
lar in each of the 25,000 units
of the new project.
Best part of it, said the big
Texan, is that folks in the devel
opment can install a shelter for
75 cents a month.
The shelters, according to the
former hurler, are being built,
with the approval of the govern
ment and "no home should be
without one."
Mort said that one of these
hide-aways can be installed in
eight hours, which maybe or
maybe not would be fast enough.
The old right-hander dog-paddled
away and up came another
old pal in the swimming pool,
there was T. C. (Buddy) Bren
nan Jr., who isn't built like a
Texan, but talks like one.
He looked pretty sharp in his
white swimming gear.
Texas, he let me know, does
n't go in for anything cheap, ex
cept when it comes to taking
care of Texans. Like in this

"But guess what we've got
planned for the poor man's golf
er," said Buddy. "For $20 a year

our country clubs. And not only

Buddy Brennan is rightly
proud of his boss, Frank Sharp,
since Mr. S. has made our lad
general manager of a gigantic
operation.
"Know what that fellow did?"
Buddy said, puffing to the sur
face in the pool. "Well, see, we
were starting this housing thing,
which eventually will bed down
87,500 people, and Mr. Sharp
locked around and didn't see
any trees.
"So what does he do? He goes
around the corner a ways and
buys himself a small forest. He
pulls up all of these trees and
transpants them in Sharpstown.
