February, 1945, at the Russian
Elack Sea resort of Yalta in the
Crimean Peninsula.
Peoole are always referring
casually to "Yalta." It is ve;y
seldom that anybody bothers to
remind us all what happened
there.
Changed World History
Well, Yalta changed the
course of world history. But a
lot of things have happened
2 -
since then to crowd it out of
memory.
Yalta provided for Russia's
entrance into the Pacific war
against Japan. It provided for
the full liberation of all the
countries conquered or domi
nated by Nazi Germany.
It also provided, among other
things, for the "complete disarm
ament, demilitarization and dis
memberment" of Germany.
The Roosevelt - Churchill -Stalin
talks in the one-time sum
mer residence of Czar Nicholas
II in the Livadiya suburb of
Yalta were held in the deepest
secrecy. No newspaper corres
pondents were even permitted
to accompany Roosevelt and
Churchill to the Crimea. It was
not until two years later that
the full text of the Yalta Treaty
was made public.
A Sell-Out
It has been charged that Yalta
was a diplomatic sell-out to So
viet Russia.
Russia got enormous conces
sions for its promise to declare
war, on Japan, including the
Study Urged
Cargo Ship Plan
San Francisco (U.R) An
AFL maritime union leader has
urged other unions to give "care
ful study" to Harry Lundeberg's
plan to make American bulk car
go ships more competitive with
foreign ships.
This plea came yesterday from
Vincent Malone, president of
the AFL Marine Firemen s
Union, which has often support
ed Lundeberg and his AFL
Sailors Union of the, Pacific.
Lundeberg's plan would cut
operating costs by reducing the
number of crewmen on bulk
carriers, and by restricting over
time pay. In addition, all crew
men would belong to the SUP

Stalin promised to enter a
pact of friendship and alliance
with the Chinese Nationalists.
Russia did enter the Pacific
fighting five days before Japan
accepted Allied surrender terms.
Instead of helping to liberate
the countries Germany had en
slaved or dominated. Russia
Communized most of them. In
stead of entering an alliance
with the Nationalists, Stalin be
trayed them to the Chinese Reds.

Meat Freight Rate
Reduction Attacked
San Francisco (U.R) West
ern meat producers and packers
have appealed to the Interstate
Commerce Commission for sus
pension of a westbound railroad
rate reduction on fresh meat
which does not include a similar
reduction in westbound live
stock rates.
E. Floyd Forbes, president of
the Western States Meat Pack
ers Association, said the rate re
duction of 50 cents per 100
pounds on fresh meat was an
nounced in . Chicago Managers
Committee of the Transcontinen
tal Freight Bureau.
"The reduction can be ruinous
to western livestock producers
and packers" by permitting "the
West to be flooded with dressed
meat slaughtered and packed
east of the Rocky Mountains,"
Forbes said.
