At Sacred
Clinic Operation Will
Installation of new chest x-ray
machinery was completed at Sa
cred Heart hospital this week
by General Electric technicians.
All patients entering the hospi
tal, and the public, may now get
chest x-rays there, it was an
nounced today by hospital offi
cials and the Jackson County
Public Health association.
Routine chest x-rays for all
patients was begun at the hospi
tal this week, and the "out-patient"
clinic, for doctors' refer
rals, special groups and the pub
lic, will be opened Thursday,
March 24. Hours are 2 to 5 p.m.
each Thursday.
Christmas Seal Money
Purchase of the equipment
was made possible through the
use of Christmas seal funds by
the Public Health association. It
is part of a survey program to
locate previously unknown cases
of tuberculosis, lung cancer,
heart conditions and other chest
ailments while they are still in
the early stages and more easily
cured.
"I am most happy to have this
service available at our hospi
tal," Sister Reine, supervisor of
Sacred Heart hospital stated to
day. "It is an added protection
our hospital can offer this com
munity, our patients and em
ployees." In Special Rooms
The new equipment, which is
a complete x-ray unit, is located
in a room built especially for it
by the hospital across from the
admission desk on the first floor.
Considerable remodeling was
necessary by the hospital in or
der to provide a convenient
place for the unit. Those going
to the "out-patient" clinic on
Thursday may go in the hospi
tal's new main entrance on the
south side of the building. Park
ing is also available there.
Providence Guild of the Hos
pital auxiliary is making plans
for staffing the "out-patient"
clinic as a volunteer public serv
ice. Mrs. J. W. McDuffie, presi
dent of the guild, will be in

Culmination of Goal
Installation of this machine,
and the one at the Community
hospital which opened in De
cember, is the culmination of a
goal toward which the Public
Health association has been
working for the past two years,
according to Mrs. Chester
Guches, association president,
and Mrs. Jack Walker, case
finding chairman.
"We are deeply grateful for
the fine cooperation we have

fession and the hospitals in mak-

ing this program possible," Mrs.
Guches stated, "for I know it is
going to prevent tragedy in the
lives of many Jackson county
residents. In addition it will
save many thousands of dollars
for the taxpayers."
Plan Campaign
The association now plans an
extensive campaign to urge all
food-handlers in the county to
have x-rays, according to Mrs.
Walker. Letters will shortly be
sent to all employers, urging
that they make arrangements
for their employees to come to
the out-patient clinics.
A chest x-ray is the best way
of detecting tuberculosis in the
early and middle stages. When
the patient begins to cough and
show outward symptoms, tuber
culosis is in the advanced stage
and much more difficult to cure.
By this time, he has very likely
spread his disease to others.
Finds Other Ailments
But tuberculosis isn't the only
ailment which the chest x-ray
detect. The x-rays show up
heart enlargement. Any growth
in the chest is disclosed, and in
many cases it detects cancer of
the lung. Many persons are alive
today because the cancer was
thus disclosed and an operation
undertaken in time.
The Heart association and the
Cancer society both hold that
chest x-rays are "worth their
weight in gold." -

Parched Colorado
Welcomes Snow;
Fires Still Rage
By UNITED PRESS
A March cold wave brought
wet, life-giving snow' to dry
Colorado wheat fields today, but
only drizzles spattered three
Southern states, where forest
fires raged.
The big cold front left Sheri
dan, Wyo., under nine inches of
snow and moved into Northern
Colorado with nearly four
inches the equivalent of an
inch of moisture.
The snows were a major boon
to the wheat and sugar beet
crops in the state, where lashing
winds have stirred up dust
clouds reminiscent of the 1930
"dust bowl" days.
But in Georgia, Florida, and
Alabama the weather failed to
deliver enough rain to douse
forest fires which have burned
over about 185,000 acres of
swamp and timber land.
All fires in Georgia and Flor
ida were contained within fire
breaks early today and only one
of them in Georgia on the west
side of the Okefenokee National
Forest was termed "out of con
trol." The cold weather also brought
shifting winds which threatened
to end the precarious stalemate
in the battle against the fires.
There were no new rains in
sight today and the winds laid a
smoke pall over the lower
Georgia seaboard.

Fortune Hunters Flock To Sierra
Hills in Frenzied Uranium Hunt
Bakersfield, Calif. flJ.R) A
thousand fortune hunters fanned
out over the High Sierra today
in a frenzied search for uranium
reminiscent of the gold fever of
a century ago.
The rush was touched off
Tuesday when the Atomic Ener
gy commission released its first
uranium map of a Far West area.
The map showed three "hot
spots" in the mountains about
30 miles east of Bakersfield.
Late Tuesday, the Kern coun
ty recorder's office reported that
130 uranium claims already had

expected to be filed today.
The uranium searchers ranged
from grizzled miners who have
spent a lifetime prospecting for
metals to greenhorns who asked,
"How do you tell a rattlesnake?"
A crowd of 1000 jammed the
street around the AEC office to
see the map. Hundreds of men
had, spent the night before the
office in the hope of being the
first in the tiny room where the
map was on display.
As soon as the map was avail
able for inspection, the prospec
tors copied the symbols on maps
of their own. Some took flash
pictures of it. As soon as each
man was finished, he pushed his
way out of the. room.
Head for Mountains
Once in the street outside,
those who had seen the map
rushed for their automobiles and
headed for the mountains.
An exception was Robert Do
herty, 38, of Hanford, Calif.
Once he made his map, he stroll
ed out of the room to a telephone
booth. There he called his part
ners 11 men waiting at scat
tered points in the Sierra, each
with a jeep and pack horse.
"We're doing this systemat
