Your Health and Its Care
By DR. WILLIAM BRADY, M.D.
Restart should address inquiries to: William Brady,
263 Ei'Camino, Beverly Hills, Calif.
FIVE THOUSAND AND
I began practice shortly before
the close of the era of antiseptic
surrjerv. it was my intention to
hang out a
neat sign, such
as the big shots
in the city
used, announc
ing simply that
wm. Brady, M,
D. could be
consulted here.
The sign paint
er didn't like
it. "You're, a
Dr. Brad?
doctor, , aren't you?" he asked.
"Then, why not make it in. wm.
Brady?" But I was firm. Didn't
the man know what M.D. meant?
I called his attention to my
diploma and my state license,
documents and certifying that I
was qualified to practice as phy
sician and surgeon. He seemed
reassured. "Oh, I see, well, that's
all right then you go on to the
ballgame and we'll have the
sign finished when you get
back." So that's how I scared 'em
away at the very outset when
I returned to the office there
was the sign telling the world
that Wm. Brady, M.D. was both
"Surgeon and Physician."
Time passed. I never knew so
much time to pass so quietly. No
body seemed to want any sur
gery. Well, if I was a surgeon I
might as well arrange the setting
to suit. I persuaded a hopeful
dealer to install an outfit of white
enamelled steel and plate glass
surgical fitments. Then I waited
another year or two. Finally a
debonair youth took a chance
perhaps he preferred to avoid
the doctors he knew and I took
his history. I was unable to make
a positive diagnosis at once re
member, it was before the dis
covery of Treponema pallidium
(syphilis germ) or the dark-field
microscopic test but the young
man, assuring me it could be
nothing, for he moved only
among the best people, agreed
to return in forty-eight hours.
When he returned, there was no
longer any doubt. I told him he
had syphilis, and ' he fainted,
cutting a eash in his head and
'smashing the plate glass top of
my instrument fable as he fell.
The patient followed mv in
structions well for a while. But
as son as the chancre (primary
sore) had nearly faded he grew
sceptical, and when no charac
teristic skin rash or sores in the
mouth appeared in the" next few
Money Needed To
Combat Budworm
Washington U.R) There is
an "urgent need" for a large
budworm control program to
forestall the threatened destruc
tion of nearly $38,000,000 worth
of timber in Oregon, Idaho, Mon
tana and New Mexico.
The Forest service has report
ed to congres that it needs $2,
570,000 to pay the federal gov
ernment's share of an extermi
nation program. An estimated
12,300,000,000 board feet of tim
ber are threatened, the service
said.
"Natural control factors" fail
ed to develop to curb the spruce
budworms, the service said, and
consequently the 1954 season
"has been exceptionally favor
able to a greatly expanded bud
worm activity.
Douglas fir trees are hardest
hit, the service said. Budworms
feed on needles and buds of
both fir and spruce trees. Those
trees not killed by the worms,
are so weakened as to be easy
victims of bark beetles.
Extermination is done most
effectively by spraying affected
areas from airplanes while bud
worm larvae are feeding.
Vancouver, Wash. U.R)
George Beckim, district fire war
den here, has announced that
fire permits for burning are re
quired in western Washington.

weeks he discontinued the treat

nothing I could do about it.
The young man went away,
and I heard or saw nothing more
of him. Then,. nearly two years
later, came the sad denounce

syphilis of the brain, which
caused his dementia. Now I
wonder what the outcome would
have been if the Wassermann
blood test had been available
then whether a positive test
would have convinced the young
man, who had some peculiar
ideas of the wonderful remedial
virtues of diet, exercise, etc., as
prescribed by Bernarr MacFad-
