Hong Kong Runway To Jut Out To Sea

authorities have decided to give
the British Crown Colony a
brand new airport featuring a
reinforced runway that juts out
into the sea.
According to an official an
nouncement, the construction of
the new airport, which in reality
is an expansion of the Colony's
present Kai Tak airport, will
represent the largest single civil
engineering contract ever to be
undertaken in the colony's his
tory of more than 100 years.
While announcing the large
scale undertaking the govern
ment advertised in the Colony's
newspapers for contractors to
handle the huge project. The ad-

granted that he would play base

Sox were informed by one of
Ted's friends that he already is
working out with 54-ounce bats
in Miami and could be expected
when he cleans up some busi

liams is running to get into

purported to report progress, at
last, in the determined fight of
the trick scientists to discover
the cause and a sure for "the
common cold." . 1
Whiskey, brands of which, just
incidentally, filled iffhz columns
of the same issue, seems to have
no remedial value, the magazine
courageously conceded, except
that it makes "a fictitious thing
called 'the common cold' more
endurable."
In order to impart body to
this hogwash the "news" maga
zine attributes to Dr. Osier this
"prescription":
Hang your hat on the bed-i
post; climb into bed, and
drink whiskey until you can
see two hats.
Now I don't believe Dr. Osier
ever gave any such prescription
or advice. It is probably the in
vention of an ambitious report
er as was the story that Dr.
Osier advocated chloroforming
men at, I forget what age. Just
for fun, I hereby promise to pay
$1,000 to the Salvation Armv or
other human welfare agency
which is equally meritorious in
my judgment, if any one proves
that (1) there is or ever .was
(even in China) a custom or prac
tice of paying the doctor a regu
lar pittance while one remained
well and stopping his. pay when
one s health was impaired: or
(2) that Dr. or Sir William Osier
ever seriously prescribed whis
key intoxication for any human
ailment. ....
I'm not facetious about this.
Every reader knows that I re
gard some of Osier's ideas and
teachings as bunk. But, even so,
Osier was the greatest medical
teacher of his day and few if
any physicians today have achie
ved such eminence among their
colleagues.
Please do not bother me with
quotations from any magazine
or newspaper story, or with
hearsay or third person inter
views. . .
Wrote Dr. Osier in the sixth
edition of his famous Practice of
Medicine, published in 1906:
Alcohol does not seem to
raise the blood pressure in
fever, and the studies of
Briggs and cook in my wards
would indicate that it is not
of value in progressive vaso
motor collapse. This does not
mean, however, that it may
not . have value in the fever
(the feverish stage of pneu
' monia), and I should be sorry
to give up its use in the
severer forms of enteric
(typhoid fever) and pneu
monia. I call that professional quib
bling. It reminds me of the quib
ble of another famous authority,
a contemporary of Osier, Dr.
Hobart A. Hare, the tenth edi
tion of whose Textbook of Thera
peutics was published in 1904. In
it Dr. Hare said "The chief uses
of alcohol are as a rapidly acting
stimulant" in heart failure, sur
gical shock, fainting, snakebite
etc. I quote from a letter Prof.
Hare wrote me explaining the
contradictions:
"It is quite conceivable that
alcohol acts as a stimulant
upon other functions of which,
as yet, we know very little, as,
for example, the ability of the
body to resist infection.
Conceivable? Yes, and so is a
mouse nest in a cat's ear. I wish

; paid for the book. And I wonder
ed, no fooling, -whether I had
J made a mistakle giving six
I years of my productive life to
become a physician.
What did Dr. Hare know about
the ability of the body, any body,
to resist infection? What did
anyone know about it? What
does anyone know about it to
day? Nothing.
Since no one knows anything
about "resistance" and no one
can describe or define such a
condition or state clearly enough
for anyone else to comprehend
what he is trying to say, it is
easy for authors of medical text
books, eminet specialists and
ethical quacks to reel off a yard
of steretyped bunk about it
