Portland Aiforney Victim of Beating
Portland (U.PJ A 34-year-old
attorney, Oliver Kermit Smith,
told police Friday he was beaten
by an unidentified assailant in
the garage of his home after he
got out of his car late Thursday.
Smith told officers the assail
ant struck him on the forehead
with what appeared to be a
bottle wrapped in a sack. Smith
said he struggled with the man
and received several blows in
the face before his glasses were
broken and the attacker dis-

garage floor.
Smith said he has no known

4-H Club News
Upper Rogue Club
Mr. and Mrs. C. Watson, own
ers of Treasure Trove of Shady
Cove, have again given their
display window to the Upper
Rogue 4-H clubs honoring Na
tional 4-H club week.
This year the display is some
what different. The U.S. flag and
the 4-H flag form part of the
background, along with pictures
of club members and their live
stock taken at the county fair
last August.
Next are certificates of the
clubs and leaders with their lit
tle stickers representing years
of club work.
The Sewing club has their en
tire county fair exhibit. Other
clubs have their record books
and ribbons.
There were a number of one
year pins for leaders and two
five-year leader pins. The county
pin for safety belongs to Bill
Littlefield. -
The 10-year award pin of Bill
Littlefield is a real honor to the
club. This was earned by per
sistent work, taking such proj
ects as cooking, forestry, car
pentry, garden, livestock, trac
tor maintenance and electricity.
Ed Houston is leader of the
Upper Rogue 4-H club. This club
is sponsored by the local Rotary
club.

posits in the hand.
In 46 cases the correct diagno
sis was made virtually at first
sight. In 18 cases the first
diagnosis was infection. Some
physicians thought the tender
ness, redness, and pain in hand
or wrist might have been caused
by an injury, say a fracture or
dislocation or a severe sprain.
In four cases the first diagnosis
was gout and acute arthritis. In
two cases the physicians sus
pected there was a foreign body
in the tissues of the hand. In
one case the patient received
treatment for gonococcic arth
ritis. X-ray pictures in 73 cases
were correctly interpreted. But
in some instances regular front
back and side projections fail to
show calcium deposits in or
about the muscles that bend
wrist and thumb. Occasionally
the calcium deposit is mistaken
for a chip fracture, or even nor
mal ossicles.
The cause of such ealctum de
posits is conjectural, although
many of the patients believe the
trouble followed some former
sprain or injury. The calcium
deposits in the hand are of the
same nature as calcium deposits
about the shoulder.
Pain and disability end In sev
eral days or a few weeks, and
the calcium deposits disappear.
Now if I had calcium deposits
in my hand, no doubt I'd holler
all over the place, but I'd either
hours after each dose of aspirin,
once or twice a day to relieve
the pain, and, of course, I'd just
lie or sit there for at least two
hours after each dose or aspirin,
even if It required only 5 grains
to relieve the pain. I'd spend
as much time exposed to the
sun, in the patio or down on the
beach or en a bench beside the
bowling green as my skin would
endure short of sunburn. That's
all. Except that I'd want pro
caine (novocaine) injected if
aspirin failed to give relief.
Speaking of calcium deposits
about jthe shoulder, let me warn
you poor souls who have dis
covered you've got such a de
posit, it doesn't mean anything.
It is the consequence, not the
cause, of inflammation, sprain,
injury, or degeneration.
Some years ago I had shoulder
bursitis that sometimes made
me cry. In the course of several
weeks I recovered, thanks to
diathermy, passive movements,
and graduated exercise. The re
covery of shoulder function,
never any further disability.
About a year later I sustained

a fracture of the opposite
shoulder. The X-ray films of
both shoulders, for comparison,
revealed that there was a cal

had been inflamed. Even so, the
shoulder was perfectly normal.
So far as I know or care the
calcium deposit may be there
still. But you see, the mere
presence of a calcium deposit
should not give you or your
doctor any concern.
