Goal Set for
Chicago Sox

Marty Marion, who's been ac
cused of being "too soft" to be a
successful big league manager,
demonstrated today that he'll
tolerate no nonsense in his bid
to lead the Chicago White Sox
to their first pennant since 1919.
The quiet-spoken former "Mr.
Shortstop" cracked down with
a $100 fine on Chico Carrasquel
for missing Tuesday's workout
and made it plain that more
fines will be levied if necessary.
It was the first disciplinary
move of any kind taken by
Marion since he became man
ager of the White Sox.

Lane, the general manager of
the White Sox, today set a 1955
goal of 100 victories for his new
manager, Marty Marion.
"That will be enough victor
ies to win the American League
pennant and I believe Marty
has the horses to do it," he con
fidently predicted.
While admitting that the
White Sox went "all out" to win
. the pennant in 1954, he did not
agree with those baseball men
who feel his club is due to slip
this season.
"After all, we started to find
out around the middle of last
season what we lacked so we
went about repairing the
fences," Lane said. "And the re
pair job we did makes the club
25 per cent stronger in my
mind."
Sees Stronger Competition
He pointed out that the club
won 94 games in 1954, the most
games a White Sox team has
won in 34 years, but still finish
ed third 17 games behind the
pennant winning Indians and
nine games behind the second
place Yankees. The Indians won
111 games, the Yankees 103.
"No club is going to win 111
this season for the league is bet
ter balanced and the second di
vision clubs have be'en strength
ened," Lane said. "But the In
dians and Yankees have added
strength, too, just as we have."
He claimed that the deals
which brought the White Sox
first baseman Walt Dropo, out
fielder Bob Nieman and pitcher
Ted Gray from Detroit; catcher
Clint Courtney, pitcher Bob
Chakales and infielder Jim
Bridweser from Baltimore; out
fielder Lloyd Merriman from
Cincinnati and third baseman
Bill Serena from the Chicago
Cubs "w ere sure fire to
strengthen our bench."

Softball association's scheduled
meeting and no business was
transacted.
President Herb Vessey has
called another meeting for Mon

450 FFA Delegates
Expected at Conclave
Some 450 members of the Fu
ture Farmers of America are ex
pected to attend the annual state
FFA convention in Central Point
next week. The event will be
March 15 to 18 at Crater High
school.
Jay Wright, national vice
president of the FFA, from
Alamo, Nev., will be one of the
speakers. Two delegates from
each of the state's 85 local chap
ters will make up the voting
body for the conduct of business.
Dan Dunham, Lakeview, is
president of the state FFA.
The convention is under the
general supervision of the state
division of vocational educa
tion, and Ralph L. Morgan, state
supervisor of the division, is
helping with the arrangements.

pected back at his desk today

drunkenness when police found
