Ohio river flood waters,
slowed down by a late winter
cold wave, were expected today
to leave 10,000 to 12,000 persons
in need of aid through a four
state area.
- The rising river appeared to
have done its worst in Ohio and
"West Virginia. But icy flood
waters still threatened down
river Ohio and Kentucky com
munities and the weather bureau
warned of possible major floods
in Indiana.
Thousands of persons were al
ready homeless in the four states.
They sought shelter in Red
Cross headquarters, public build
ings, and private homes. In Indi
ana, Legionnaires, Boy Scouts,
National Guardsmen and church
groups helped evacuate families
from threatened homes.
River Still Rising
The American hed Cross met
the threat by rushing 21 disaster
specialists kito the four states.
Special regional disaster head
quarters were set up at flood
threatened Ashland, Ky., and
Red Cross chapters from Hunt
ington, W. Va., to the Mississippi
river were alerted.
The Red Cross said 1,600 fam
ilies have already suffered dam
age to homes or property in the
four-state area and it expects
10,000 to 12,000 persons to regis
ter for rehabilitation assistance
before the flood waters subside.
In Ohio, the swollen river was
still rising from Gallipolis to
Portsmouth at the rate of .05
xeet an hour.
Businesses Evacuated
A flood crest of 62.5 feet, 11.5
feet above flood stage. wa Pv-
pected at Ashland, Ky., early to-
uay ana me river was expected
to crest later at Portsmouth at
60.5 feet above flood stage.
In Cincinnati, where the
muaay water lapped at river
side buildings, the river was ex
pected io crest nine feet above
flood stage at 61 feet by Thursday.
The Ohio Highway Patrol said
today it had evacuated 16 busi
nesses. Yesterday, flood waters
xorcea 1,355 persons to move
irom their homes in Hamilton
County.

San Francisco Cable
Cars on Auction Block
San Francisco (U.R) The
City of San Francisco is selling
10 cable cars today to the highest
bidders.
City Purchaser Harold H.
Jones said the city had received
about 25 bids. Purchasers will be
given 30 days to remove the
cable cars from the barn.
The cars were declared sur
plus after some of the cable car
lines were shortened in a recent
reorganization.

Mamie Eisenhower was suffering
today from a "slight touch of the
flu."
White House Secretary Mary
Jane McCafffree said the first
lady has been indisposed since
Sunday afternoon.
. Mrs. Eisenhower cancelled all
her appointments both Monday
and today.
Talent Couple Purchase
Happy CampCabin Camp
Happy Camp, Calif. Mr.
and Mrs. Leonard Hilsenhoff,
owners of the Talent Market at
Talent, Ore., have purchased
Cedar Pines, a residence with
rental cabins, near the junction
of the Scott and Klamath rivers,
according to the Klamath River
Clarion.
The paper said the Hilsen
hoffs bought the place from Mr.
and Mrs. Fred Wilson, and will
move there as soon as they sell
their market.

Grace Kelly Joins
Marilyn Monroe in
Movies' Doghouse
Hollywood (U.R) Marilyn
Monroe moved over today to
make room for actress Grace
Kelly in Hollywood's doghouse.
Like marvelous' Marilyn, Miss
Kelly was suspended by MGM
studios for refusing parts in two
vehicles.
Miss Monroe, a sensation
whether she's acting or just
standing around, was suspended
by 20th Century Fox last Janu
ary on similar grounds.
Might Be Spoiled
Contacted in New York where
she is busy settling down in a
new Fifth Avenue apartment,
Miss Kelly admitted she might
be getting a little spoiled, par
ticularly after her role in "The
Country Girl," which won her
an Academy Award nomination
this year.
"I'm not trying to be difficult
or temperamental," Miss Kelly
said, "I just don't feel I'm right
for the Dart in 'Jeremv Rodoek
My agent told that to the studio,

Dramatic Part
"It's difficult to describe the
role. It's a straight dramatic part.
But, you know, every role now
seems to pale in comparison with

hoped Miss Kelly would recon

Campfire Girls
Birthday Coming
All groups of the Camp Fire
organization in the Eagle Point
school district are working on
plans for a birthday dinner.
This will celebrate the founding
of the organization 45 years ago.
The birthday project for the
year is "Let Freedom Ring" and
is based on patriotism and the
Bill of Rights.
O-Ne-Kizu group began Feb
ruary activities with a roller
skating party which benefitted
the March of Dimes.
A number of girls earned
some of the requirements for
the trail seeker badges by going
on a hike.
For the valentine meeting the
girls made and decorated valen
tine cookies. Each ' girl took
some of the cookies home with
her.
The last meeting of the month
was on a nice day so when busi
ness was over we learned a new
outdoor game.
The girls from this group who
gave community service during
February were Dorrene Chris
tian, who waited tables for the
Lady Lions; Sharen Williams
and Lana McGraw, who did
baby sitting for the PTA meet

for Tudor guild's spring style
show to be held March 21 at 8
p.m. at Tally Ho restaurant, the
committee states. However those
who wish to be placed on the
waiting list for reservations may
call Mrs. Harry Skerry, Ash
land 2-6286.
In addition . to Paul Kliss,
Portland, as narrator, the serv
ices of Rod Barrows as con
tinuity writer have also been
obtained. Mr. . Barrows is a
Portland free lance writer who
has written many scripts for
style shows.
The committee asks that those
who have purchased tickets and
made reservations but do not
plan to attend to call Mrs. Harry
Skerry at Ashland 2-6286, in
order that those on the wait
ing list may have an opportunity
to securereservations.

Thimblena Club
Thimblena 4-H Sewing club
met at the home of Reba Taylor
March 4 in Gold Hill. Mrs. Ferd
Jones is leader. '
President Jan Newland con
ducted the meeting. The flag
ceremony was led by Sue Wood
ward, and the 4-H pledge by
Judith Higgins. Roll call was
answered by naming a favorite
state.
Mrs. Beman demonstrated
good posture. 4 ,
The next meeting will be held
March 25 at the home of Dianne
Jore.

Meads Return
From Trip South
Mr. and Mrs. N. A. Mead,
Grant Acres, Central Point,
have returned from a winter va
cation trip. The Meads first vis
ited their daughted, Mrs. P. R.
Attix, the former Kathryn Mead,
at Watsonville, Calif., who ex
pects to join her husband over
seas in the near future.
They then visited friends in
Los Angeles, and continued to
Phoenix and Tempe, . Ariz.,
where they saw Mr. and Mrs,
W. A, Holloway, former Med
ford residents now living in
Tempe. The Meads found five
other Medford couples vacation
ing in Tempe, all staying in the
same trailer court, and the seven
couples enjoyed a barbecue din'
ner together.
The Meads spent some time in
Indio, Calif., where they at
tended the date festival and
horse show, the latter featuring
camel races. They also visited in
Palm Springs, and returned to
Medford by way of Reno where
they visited Mrs. Mead's brother
and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.
J. A. Wells.

the end of last week after a
two-week vacation trip. They
visited Palm Springs and Thous
and Palms, Calif., and returned
