are going to keep the cup in
Canada." The Canadians, who
now have won the world title
for the 15th time in the 21
tournaments that have been
held dating back to 1924, crush
ed Russia, 5-0, here yesterday
before 9500 cheering spectators.

In Baton Rouge Meet
Baton Rouge, La. (U.R)
Boyish Billy Maxwell, the
chunk former National Amateur
champ from the Texas plains,
went gunning for his first PGA
tournament win today in an 18
hole playoff with two seasoned
pros for first prize money in the
Baton Rouge Open.
A putt that hung on the lip
of the 18th hole cost the 25-year
old Maxwell a celar-cut victory
at the end of the regular four
rounds. No one except Maxwell
seemed to know he needed it.
Veterans Bo Wininger of
Oklahoma City and Jimmy
Clark of Laguna Beach, Calif.,
already had posted their 72-hole
totals of 278, an even 10 under
par, to tie for the lead.

association and announced by
United Press.

Medford high picked up only
three points in the state wres
tling tourney at Corvallis as only
Les Walch of three Tornado en
tries reached semi-finals in the
tournament.
Walch won his first two
matches then lost two by 2 to 0
and 3 to 1 decisions in the 156
pound class.
Bill Dyer wrestled twice in
the tournty, winning his first
match and losing the second. He
came close to going farther and
possibly taking the mantle in the
heavyweight group. The man he
lost to, Neil Callison, Redmond,
lost by only a scant margin to
Jack Smith, Newberg, the event
ual champ. Dyer was even in
points with his last foe but Calli
son got the referee's decision-.
Paul Eckel In the 178-pound
class lost his first match and was
eliminated when the man who
beat him was defeated.
Canby won the championship
with 75 points. Lebanon was
second with 62. Klamath Falls
got 43 and Newberg 39.
Radiation Fails To
Harm Security Guard
Las Vegas (U.R) The Atomic
Energy Commission said today
examination of a security guard
who entered an area of high
radiation by mistake showed he
was in "normal health."
Dr. Ross Sutherland, of Las
Vegas, examined Eugene D.
Haynes, 36, yesterday and found
the guard's blood count and
pulse was normal. Haynes, of
Coatati, Calif., was exposed
after Tuesday's A-blast to 39
roentgens of radiation, 10 times
the level considered safe for a
human to receive during con
tinual exposure during a period
of 13 weeks.
The AEC said at the exposure
level of 39 roentgens, some per
sons could be expected to have
fewer white blood cells, while
j&thers would show no effects.
It was pointed out Haynes as
exposed only briefly.
Haynes, " an ex-Marine who
had fought in World War II,
said he felt fine and didn't
know "what all the fuss is
about."

Board of New Union
Hofds First Meeting
Cleveland (U.R) The ex
ecutive board of the nation's new
est union, the CIO Oil, Chemical
and Atomic Workers Internation
al Union met here Saturday in
its first meeting as governing
body of the new union.
The convention which brought
the merger of oil and chemical
workers into one labor group
closed Friday night after the
election of officers.
The president of the new or
ganization is O. A. Knight of
Denver, former head of the oil
workers. The secretary-treasur
er is T. M. McCormick, also of
Denver, and formerly secretary
treasurer of the oilmen. ,
The headquarters for the new
union, representing 180,000
members, will be in Denver, the
former headquarters of the oil
workers.
Hoop Bribe Offer Being
Probed by 'Authorities
'Niagara Falls, N. Y. (U.R)
The Niagara County district at
torney said today the investiga
tion into an attempt to fix Satur
night's Niagara-Canisius basket
ball game was stymied.
William H. Earl, who revealed
the attempt in conjunction with
Erie County Dist. Atty. John
Dwyer, said he has received no
further leads. Earl and Dwyer
held up the announcement of
the attempt until the halftime of
Saturday night's game because
they hoped the unknown briber
might try to contact Charley
Hoxie, star Niagara forward,
just before game time.
Hoxie, a 6-foot-3, 22-year-old
senior from New York City, was
contacted by the unknown caller
last .Wednesday. The call was
placed from Erie, Pa., to Niag
ara University and transferred
to Hoxie's residence.

versity of Washington grabbed

sion swimming title here Satur
day, sweeping first place in nine
events and gathering up 116
points to end the two-day meet.
Washington State was second
with 59 and Oregon State placed

gon trailed with 10.

Clair Engle (D-Calif.) in his
weekly news letter today, said
he received a note from a pros
pective mother-in-law . asking
why the Navy wouldn't let a
sailor off his ship in San Diego
to marry her daughter.
The congressman contacted
the ship and learned the young
man hadn't asked for leave.
. "Shortly thereafter I had a
note from the sailor himself,"
Engle wrote. The note asked
"why I didn't mind, my own
business."
