v FLAMES FILL NIGHT SKY Towering wall of fire looms
before firemen as they battle four-alarm waterfront fire
in San Francisco. Four empty warehouses were destroyed
at estimated quarter-millioa-dollar loss. Flames threatened
the Navy attack transport USS Merrick but her crew cast
j c" lines and let her drift into the bay with the tide. Two
(nreboats and 31 pieces of equipment manned cy 130
t firemen battled the inferno.
Bills in Legislature
Salem (U.R) A bill which
would stiffen loyalty require
ments lor state civil defense
workers has been sent back to
the Military Affairs Committee
by the House.
Rep. Alfred Corbett (D-Port-land)
attacked the bill as an as
sault on personal liberties and
said he was surprised and
shocked that such a proposal
should have come from a com
mittee of a Democratic Legis
lature. The bill would deny persons
the right to be employed by civil
defense agencies or be associated
with the agencies if they ever
had personally advocated or
been an affiliate of any political
party or organization advocat
ing change or overthrow of the
government by force.-
Corbett criticized the bill on
two principal points the use
of the word affiliate and the
denial of employment to per
sons who may have participated
,ln activities in the past when
such activities were not con
sidered subversive.
Salem (U.R) A measure to
permit private clubs, not serving
the general public, to serve
liquor by the drink whether
they serve food or not has lost
out in the Senate in a tie vote,
15 to 15.
Sen. John P. Hounsell R-
Sen. John P. Hounsell (R
Senate Committee on Alcoholic
Traffic, immediately changed his
vote from aye to no and served
notice he would move for re
consideration. A tie vote loses a
measure, which must have a
majority, or at least 16 votes to
pass.
Salem (U.R) A bill to give
State Supreme Court justices
a salary boost of $3,000 has
been introduced in the Senate
and it appeared to have a good
chance of passing. V
Present salary of the justices
is $12,000.
The bi-partisan bill was signed
by 21 to 30 senators and 35
of 60 representatives.
Salem (U.R) A bill has
been introduced in the Senate
which would suspend the license
of physicians who have been
adjudged to be mentally ill or
admitted to a state mental hos
pital for treatment. The suspen
sion would continue until the
Eoard of Medical Examiners re
ceives competent evidence that
the former practitioner is no
longer mentally ill- and the
privilege to practice may be
safely restored.
Salem (U.R) A measure al
ready approved by the House to
enable the Oregon Development
Commission to do limited adver
tising to promote industry in
this state lost out in the Senate
in a 15-15 tie vote. Sen. John
C. F. Merrifield (R-Portland)
changed his vote to no and served
notice he would move for reconsideration.
