' Mercy Flights Take
Patient to Portland
C. A. Lien, resident of an
apartment on East Main st., was
flown to Portland for treatment
of multiple fractures and com
plications Friday evening, ac
cording to Mercy Flights offi
cials, who flew him north.
He is to receive treatment at
the Veterans Administration hos
pital there. Lien is the 332nd
patient carried by planes of the
non-profit corporation.
Eagle Point
Eagle Point Mrs. Roy Smith,
who has been a patient at the
Sacred Heart hospital in Med-
ford for the past two weeks is
reported to be improving nicely
and will soon be returning to
her home here.
Mrs. Jack Fortin, also of Eagle
Point, underwent surgery at the
Sacred Heart hospital Wednes
day, March 2, and is reported
to be resting as well as can be
expected at this time.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Greenwood
and family, formerly of Madras
Ore., have moved into the Clar
ence Young home here which
they purchased when the
Youngs moved to Medford.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Chamber
lain, Eagle Poin.t and, house
guests, Mr. and Mrs. George
Peters, of Square Butte, Mont.,
were dinner guests of Mr. and
Mrs. Frank Chamberlain Thurs
day, March 3.
Mrs. Bertha Briggs, aged
mother of Mrs. 'Bob' Mitchell
of Eagle Point, who was so bad
ly burned about six weeks ago,
is still in a critical condition
in a Medford hospital. The
friends and neighbors of the
family are sincerely hoping she
will soon take a turn toward
recovery.
Jack Allen and family arrived
in Eagle Point Feb. 10 for a
visit with Mr. and Mrs. Rudy
Weidman, parents of Mrs. Allen,
(Carol Lee) and his parents liv
ing in Medford. The second day
after arriving he was injured
while riding a motorcycle near
his parents home. He was taken
to the Naval hospital at Bremer
ton, Wash., where he will re
main until he is able to be as
signed to another base. He had
been at the Naval Air station at
Corpus Christi, Tex. Carol Lee
and baby, will remain here with
her parents until the time he is
reassigned.

laborers, snow shovellers, cold
storage men, butchers, occupants
of basement apartments or build
ings with concrete floors, that
it may be pleasant wintering in
Egypt, the south of France or
LaJolla, but it won't do your
rheumatiz any good.
Fifty years later medical au
thorities seem unimpressed by

old bunk entirely perhaps be
cause they have good friends in
the health resort business.
One recognized authority on
arthritis and other joint disabil
ities regards "atrophic" (rheu
matoid) arthritis as "one of tha
most common and most serious
forms of rheumatic disease" (it
would never do to say rheuma
tiz) and shows how far we have
progressed since Osier's time by
refurnishing Osier's view with
horsefeathers:
"It is not difficult to perceivp
tne adverse effect of a
damp climate . . . to which the
average individual can adjust
himself . . . may lead to lower
ing of the general resistance
. . . higher incidence of atrophic
arthritis nmong those living
under poor housing conditions
and among those who through
occupation are continually ex
posed to cold and wet."
You see, children, we still
have with us the poor, low re
sistance and occupations that ex
pose the poor souls to cold and
dampness."
Dr. Osier was not unfamiliar
with the $10 word "arthritis,"

with his knowledge.
As a matter of fact "arthritis'
cold : is a misnomer for joint disability
oi over a year s standing, with
few exceptions. It means in-
uammanon, ana in most in
stances of chronic rheumatiz
there is no sign of inflammation
present. Tha trouble is joint de
generation, due, I believe to
nutritional deficiency through
the years from childhood to
breakfast, and for further infor
mation about it, it can do you
no harm to send a stamped, self
