Fifty-Third Session of State Legislature
Seems at Standstill; MMBFM Formed
By FRANCES LITTRELL
Salem This is the 53rd day
of the session. Seemingly things
are at a standstill pace. The mi
nor bills, where there is a small
amendment being made such as
a word or the addition of a new
paragraph, are being passed
quickly. However, the contro
versial bills come to the floor
and before they can get to the
third reading someone has them
referred back to committee for
additional revision. This, of
course, means long tiresome ses
sions both in committee rooms
and on the floor.
Al is one of three appointed
to a sub-committee to study the
four bills on sign boards. They
are very controversial and we
have received stacks of mail on
them, both pro and con.
Tuesday of this week Mrs.
Robert Thornton gave an infor
mal coffee for the legislative
wives at her home on Alvarado
terrace. The Supreme Court jus
tices' wives assisted her in greet
ing her guests and about the
rooms, pouring, etc.
Wednesday afternoon we all
tried to listen in on the hearing
of Mr. Hill's sales tax bill, Nc.
41. At times it was very dry and
uninteresting and at times there
was hilarious laughter due to
the fact that those testifying
were not well informed on the
subject and were just expound
ing on their own little pet
peeves. This ,of course, does ont
apply to all of those who testi
fied on the issue. A few gave
very good reasons both for and
against a sales tax.
Wednesday evening we at
tended Kotary's 50th anniver
sary dinner party. The program
featured a review of the fash
ions of 1905, won by the Rotary
members and a motion picture,
"The Great Adventure," based
on Rotary International history.
We dined with Mr. Harry
Riches, a schoolmate of Dr. E. R.
Durno. It was nice to have Eric
Allen from the Tribune here
also, and fun to look up and see
the beaming face of Ed Branch
field, who has spent two weeks
here in the judiciary's office.
Jerry Cottingham and Robert
Root called at our desk this
week.
A new organization was born
in the House this week. It is call
ed "M M B F M" and means "me
and my big fat mouth." The
Apiarian Talks
For Garden Club;
Director Speaks
Delmar Smith spoke to mem
bers of the Crater Garden club
Thursday on the usefulness of
bees to the gardener. An
apiarian, Mr. Smith also ex
plained habits of bees.
Mrs. A. O. Floyd, district di
rector for the Siskiyou district,
was a guest and spoke to the
members concerning the possi
bility of a freeway being con
structed along Hawthorne park.
It was announced that garden
club members of the area plan
to protest against such a pro
posal. Year books were given out
by Mrs. John Rock.
The meeting was held at the
home of Mrs. Warren Holbrook
and roll call was answered by
reports on projects begun last
season. Mrs. Clarence Taylor
spoke on the bird of the month,
the chickadee. The flower of
the month, the jasmine, was dis
cussed by Mrs. Clarence Melle
bye. Mrs. Mel Wiggins and Mrs.
Arnold Bohnert were guests,
Mrs. Bohnert being a prospective
member.
The next meeting will be post
poned because of school spring
vacations, and will be held March
24 at the home of Mrs. Henry
DeVoss with Mrs. Paul Gandt
as the cohostess. Mrs. Warren
LaBounte assisted Mrs. Holbrook
with refreshments.
first member is Representative
Howard who often says the
wrong thing at the right time.
He was presented with a two
foot red toothbrush and must
keep it until another House
member gets flustered enough
to deserve it.
Last week the Oregon Jour
nal took a poll of the number
and what newspapers were read
by the legislators. It was inter
esting to note the number read
ing our own Valley papers. As
most of you know, the state pays
for five pars for each legisla
tor. We are reading seven and
it is no small task to cover them
each day what with the many
other tasks we have. I try to
read them and circle in red the
articles I feel Al should read;
the minor ones we try to discuss
in the few seconds we have free.
So if you wonder why we read
the newspapers during the ses
sions, that's your answer.
