Winners Named
Medford Duplicate Bridge club
held master point play Tuesday,
and winners have been an
nounced. '
Mrs. H. J. Boyd and her part
ner, John Solheim, scored 103
points to top north-south play
ers. Second for this playing posi
tion went to Mrs. W. W. Steven
son and B. L. Sanderson, who
scored. 98 points, and third was
won by Mrs. William Kennedy
and Mrs. Margaret Alcorn, with
93 points. In fourth place were
Mrs. B. L. Sanderson and Mrs.
Al Gilhousen, 87 points.
Topping east-west players
were Mrs. T. J. Fuson and Roy
Pruitt, scoring 88V2 points. Wil
liam Isaacs and Mr. Boyd were
second with 85, and in third
place were Mrs. L; E. McClintock
and Mrs. Clay - Cornett who
earned 84V4 points. Mrs. R. J.
Conroy and George Choate took
fourth with 76Vi points. ,
Refreshments were served by
Mrs. Stevenson and Mrs. Frank
Baker.
Young People
To Meet Sunday
Phoenix Westminster group
for young people of Phoenix
Presbyterian church will meet
Sunday, March 6, at the home
of Miss Sandra Owens. At this
meeting the group will com
mence a series of panel discus
sions with several taking part.
Last meeting was held at the
home of Miss Elizabeth Prah
mann. '
The men's organization met
Monday night for a covered dish
supper Plans are being made for
men to meet at the church Sat
urday afternoon to clean the
grounds and trim shrubbery. All
men who can are urged to be
present
Each Wednesday night classes
are being conducted in bow and
arrow making and in fly tying
for the boys of the community.
First-Night Audience Likes
Performance of The Mikado
Last night's opening perform
ance of "TheMikado" at Church
ill,hall, Southern Oregon college,
proved again that you can't go
wrong with Gilbert and Sulli
van. The audience appreciated
every moment of the lilting
songs, the sharp humor and gay
costumes of this' long-time fav
orite comic opera.
And the cast earned the en
thusiastic rpplause of the au
dience. Tresa Matlack, Medford
soprano, is an utterly delightful
Yum Yum. Mrs. Matlack's voice
and appearance are both ideally
suited to roles of this type, and
she made a great hit with the
opening night audience. Play
ing opposite the lovely Yum
Yum is Gene Brown as Nanki
Poo and here again the casting
directors were fortunate in that
their hero not only has a fine
tenor voice but makes a fine
stage appearance as well.
Richard Graham must have
been very busy indeed these last
few weeks for he had almost
as many actual jobs in this pre
sentation as he has in theory as
Pooh-Bah, "lord high everything
else." In addition to his out
standing performance as the
very aristocratic noble who can
trace his ancestry back . to a
"primordial protoplasmic, atomic
gJobule," Graham served as
stage director and also wrote
some keen comedy lines for the
songs of Ko-Ko and the Mikado.
One reason why this comic
opera remains such a favorite
with audience is because of the
two songs customarily re-written
to bring the lines up to date
and Graham ':scs them to good
comedy vantages, taking
cracks at senators and TV panel

Donald Lewis is not far behind
in his interpretation of the lesser
role of the Mikado. -
Frances Thrun, another Med
ford singer known for her truly
fine voice, plays the elderly
Katisha, and teamed with Mrs.
Matlack as the remaining "two
little maids" are Ina Feero as
Pitti-Sing and Helen Brown as
Peep-Bo.
, The cast is completed with
William Hansen as Fish-lush,
Lyman Pruitt as Go-To and Bev
erly Bennett as the state um
brella bearer. Both the men's
and women's choruses are fine
as far as their musical work
goes, but their action last night
vas somewhat disorganized and
lackadaisical, something apt to
happen on an opening night.

fine small orchestra, and Car
oline Andrews Werner coached
the soloists. Mrs. Werner's in
terest in and knowledge of "The
Mikado" stems back to her girl
hood days when her father Ed
Andrews, playing with the An
drews Opera compnay, was
known far and wide for his
portrayal of Ko-Ko. -

nard Windt, cello; Delmar Myers,
flute; Virginia Westerfield, clar
inet; Clair Lorton, trumpet;
Jack Scong, trombone; Milo

tor; Helen Robinson, planning
director and Ruedi Vest, stage
manager.
The scenery for this produc
tion of "The Mikado" is both
colorful and artistic and the cos
tumes, imported from Portland,
are rich in appearance.
Musicians and actors of the
college and valley have put
much hard work and time into
this production, and it is hoped
they will be repaid with larger
audiences tonight and Saturday.
Curtain time is 8:30 p.m. and
tickets may be obtained in Med
ford at Puruckers or at the door
of Churchill hall. O.S.

president, Mrs. Lester parker,

The president appointed Mrs.
Otto Jones as dinner chairman
for the district meeting to be
held in Gold Hill at the Odd Fel
lows hall April 12.
In the absence of a speaker,
the afternoon program was lea
by Mrs. Claire Douglas who
spoke on stretacarpus and glox
inias. Seeds of these two flowers
was given to the members. Mrs.
Harry Quinn joined the club at
this meeting.
Mrs. George Tulare and Mrs.
Lloyd Dusenberry received
prizes and Mrs. Dickinson a cor
sage. Next meeting will be at the
home of Mrs. Frank Carter Fri
day, March: 18. Speaker will be
Mrs. Clare Douglas and the sub
ject will be birds.

president of Jackson County
Classroom Teachers at a recent
dinner meeting at Howard
school.

the business meeting.

Howard 4-H Cooking club he'd
a meeting February 28 at Mrs.
Thurman Barnes' home. Presi
dent Nancy Barnes called the
meeting to order. Roll call was
taken by each member telling
her favorite food. There were
seven members present.
Jackie Gillaspey led the 4-H
pledge and also gave a demon
stration on labor saving. Mrs.
Barnes gave us new assign
ments to complete before . the
next meeting. We also elected
a song leader, who is Judy Geb
hard and the game chairman is
Dorothy Pleyer. The next meet
ing will be held at the home of
