even Marlon Brando, Miss
Piazza said defensively, con
gratulated her on not losing
"dignity" in her act.
Lost No Dignity
"He came to my dressing
room after the show and told
rr.e I didn't lose any dignity by
my act, even with all the jazz
in it," she said. "You can t say
sex appeal is the element in it,
but showmanship.
"I love playing for the picture
people," she added. "They dig
the act."

cited about her act at the Cocoa
nut Grove that they went back
stage to tell her about it. In her
routine she first sings opera
arias. Then she changes her cos
tume behind a screen to a low
cut dress, split up the side. In
that costume she belts out her
slightly high-brow version of
jazz.
The diva launched her Dixie
act at a New York hotel where
she collected record business
and more press clippings than
opera stars usually enjoy. Now
she may step on those publicized
legs into movies and a TV series.
Talking TV
"I'm talking to CBS about a
TV series, possibly light com
edy," she said. "Joe Pasternak,
the producer at MGM, has men
tioned my singing in a movie
musical, "The LasVegas Story."
In person Miss Piazza has the
dignity and dramatic speaking
voice of the usual opera star.
But she also' owns the drive of
an ambitious woman who ad
mits you can't make much
money or achieve popular fame
in opera houses. Whether opera
stars like herself and Helen
Traubel should kick up their
heels in nightclubs is a contro
versey, she confessed.
"A lot of opera stars don't
like to unbend and many peo
ple admire the fact they are
distant and untouchable," she
said. "But other fans do like
to see an opera singer display
a little bit of humanity.
"I'm not giving up opera,"
she added. "I sing it in my act.
I love opera and think every
town in this country should
have its own opera. They do in
Europe.
"But I'm from New Orleans
and I like to sing Dixieland,
too. I go from 'Madam Butter
fly' to jazz in my show and no
singer has done that before."

Iridium Coil Simulates
Heat of Jet Engines

General Electric Company en
gineers have come up . with
something to stimulate the
white-hot heat of jet engine
combustion chambers. It's a six
inch coil of irridium worth
about S175 an ounce.
The high temperatures,
which soon would melt ordin
ary metals, were generated in a
small furnace no larger than a
wastebasket.
A tiny electric current was
passed through the iridium coil,
making it possible to calibrate
temperature-measuring probes
for use in taking jet engine
temperatures.

Five Teachers Courses
Slated Spring Quarter
Five college extension classes,
offered especially for teachers,
will be offered during spring
quarter in the Medford area, ac
cording to the city schools office.
They include school super
vision, special education (speech
correction), oral English for
teachers alcohol studies in the
school curriculum, and methods
and research materials, hand
writing. The classes will start late in
March. . Details can be obtained
from principals of local schools,
or from the school office here.
Vets' Tax Exemption
Filings Urged Soon
Veterans or widows of veter
ans who are eligible for property
tax exemptions must file appli
cations for the exemptions by
April 1, according to County As
sessor Robert Fowler.
He said the law covering the
exemptions will be strictly fol
lowed.
The exemption, totaling $1,500
applies only to veterans who are
certified by the Veterans Ad
ministration to have a disability
of 40 per cent or more. A new
certificate must be furnished
each year, together with the ap
plication. Fowler urged veterans to ob
tain the certificates and file at
once. The, exemption applies to
homesteads and personal property.
Increasing population of the
U.S. will require available farm
acreage to produce at least 28
per centmore food by 1975 to
maintain present American
standards of living , and eating.

Seeking Support
For Fund Campaign

When people help one another
voluntarily, human society is
fortified by a strength that comes
from the hearts of men and
women of good will.
The Red Cross serves as a
channel.
Across the nation, hundreds
of thousands of volunteer help
ing hands are ready to save
neighbors in time of disaster, to
help neighbors' sons and daugh
ters with the problems and
emergencies that arise during
military service, to help keep a
life-saving stream of blood plas
ma and its derivatives flowing
to civilan hosptals here at home
and to military hospitals here
and overseas.
These helping hands are kept
active and in readiness by
the support given by the Amer
ican people. Since it was found
ed in 1859 the Red Cross has
become such an important part
of pur way of life that cancella
tion,' or even reduction, of Red
Cross services would be a seri
ous matter. t
Funds Needed
If funds are not adequate Red
Cross services will be. curtailed.
More than half the blood used
in civilian hospitals, and vir
tually all in military hospitals,
is supplied through the Red
Cross. Other services are just as
important .to millions of people
throughout the world.
.Your contribution to the Red
Cross is not a donation. It merely
preserves ' a service that is al
ready in existence here and is
serving the citizens of Jackson
county every day. In effect, it is
payment for services already re
ceived. j
The Red Cross program needs
no justification of war or emer
gency to show its . value. It
proves its value year after year
by saving lives, relieving anx
iety and distress, and 'reducing'
human suffering. But in time
of international tension and un

From Camp White

For the past four years,', the
problem of welding together a
working crew to operate the VA
Domiciliary center has, been in
the hands of a man who has de
voted much . of his life to the
game of football, in which he
was both a player and a coach.
H. J. Heitkemper, personnel
officer, came to Camp White
from Barnes hospital, where he
had .been in personnel work
since leaving the Oregon State
Board of Education, Division of
Vocational education at the close
of . the last war. During and af
ter the war, he handled delicate
industrial relations, problems at
Pacific Coast plants of Westing
house Electric corporation.
Athletic Career
His career in football was
that of a "tramp athlete" mov
ing from player to coach, at one
time with the semi-pro Kansas
City Blues, and other at the
Knute Rockne school at Oregon
State. He was named all confer
ence center and end three years
at Columbus college Sioux Falls,
S.D., where he started to play.
Heitkemper has a file of in
teresting testimonials to his rec
ord in what was to have been
his profession, as coach and di
rector of physical education. He
also has quite a background of
experience in schools along the
Pacific Coast.
There was the time he was
employed by the motion picture
industry as physical director for
about 100 professional children
from the studios, including Bet
ty Grable and Mickey Rooney.
At nearby Whittier Industrial
school, he was head coach of a
team that never lost a game in
three years. "I really had three
teams there," he noted, "an all
Mexican team, an all-colored
team, and an all-white team."
Rated Highly
Among his testimonials, is one
from R. E. Hanley formerly head
football coach at ' Northwestern
university, which states: "I
found out that Knute Rockne
Notre Dame coach, thought very
highly 'of this chap and in fact
all the information tha$ I have
been able to gain on him rates
him very highly.
"I understand, that he employs
the Notre Dame system of of
fense, which is one bf the great
est styles of football in the
country." . '
Another letter is from James
Phelan, head coach at the Uni
versity of Washington, saying:
"I am familiar with Mr. Heit-
kemper's record, and feel that
he is one of the promising young,
coaches of the northwest."
Among the assignments he
held were those of coach at El
gin, Ore., high school, Milwau
kee High near Portland, Pacific
Military academy and Junior
college, Culver - City, Calif
Whittier state; and Hill Military
academy, Portland. -
assumes even greater signifi
cance. '
The Red Cross, Is an example
of people helping people with
out parallel in the world's his
tory. In the event of war caused
disaster, vthe American Red
Cross functions as an integral
part of civil defense. In this
time of crisis in the East, it is
more urgent than ever that it be
able to continue its services and
stand in readiness through the
year 1955. -

Before he entered the service,
Heitkemper was superintendent
of the Puget Sound Naval acad
emy. He was ' in Danzig, Ger
many, in 1939, with a student
tour, the summer that Hitler
precipitated the Second World
war.
An event has been, arranged
for Friday afternoon, with Heit
kemper officiating as personnel
officer, in the. presentation of
the annual "incentive awards"
to employees, for service of 30,
20 and 10 years with the federal
government.. : . -
"In order to emphasize the
importance of good government
in the world today, we have in
vited Eric Allen Jr., city editor
of the Medford Mail Tribune,
to address the group. His inter
est, as reflected in the columns
of that paper, city, state and na
tional governmental operations,
is well known," he declared.
In addition to service pins to
be presented by Acting Man
ager R. H. Denning, suggestion
awards will be made to William
Rawson, dietetics, Kenneth
Black, domiciliary, and John Pe
terson, engineering. "
The Eagle Point High school
band under direction of Steve
Whipple will, open the proceed
ings with the national anthem
and concluding remarks will be
made by Acting Assistant Man
ager R. H. Ruff in.
