California Leads
Region in Total
Tree Farm Acreage

fornia leads the western pine
region's 12 states in total tree
farm acreage but Oregon is close
behind, the Western Pine asso
ciation announced today.
The association, which certi
fies tree farms in the pine region,
reported that California's west
ern pine tree farms cover more
than 1,600,000 acres. Oregon is
second in tree farm area with
nearly 1,500,000 acres.
Idaho leads the region in tree
farms, having 297 compared to
160 for California.
These figures were released as
the association opened its annual
meeting at the Sheraton-Palace
Hotel. More than 350 lumber
men are attending the three-day
affair.
Association President U. R.
Armstrong said the significant
trend in the West's tree farm
program today is the growing
number of owners of smaller
forest lands "who are learning
that growing trees as a crop is a
paying proposition."
He said his association certi
fied 193 new tree farms in 1954,
most of them smaller owner
ships. 'Tree farming on smaller
ownerships in California is well
under way," Armstrong said,
"'but there is a tremendous po
tential yet to be developed. Cali
fornia eventually could well
become one of the nation's lead
ers in both tree farm numbers
and acreage. Our association and
industry are pushing toward
that goal."
Armstrong's home state Idaho,
increased its tree farm num
bers by more than 140 during
1954. Altogether, there are 658
tree farms covering 5,700,000
acres in the westerh pine region.

, Teets said he seized the manu
script yesterday when Chessman
attempted to sign over the rights
to it to his attorney, Rosalie
Asher of Sacramento.
The warden said grounds for
the seizure were that under the
state penal code Chessman is
prohibited from entering into
any type of contract because
condemned prisoners are held to
be civilly dead.
Chessman's first prison book,
"Cell 2455 Death Row," became
a best seller. The title of his sec
ond novel is "Trial by Ordeal."
The prisoner was doomed under
California's Little Lindbergh
law on 17 counts of kidnaping,
robbery and rape but through
numerous appeals has held off
execution for 6Vi years.
Liquor Commission
Measure Tabled

Alcoholic Traffic Committee
yesterday tabled one bill that
would have set up a three-man,
full-time paid liquor commission
in Oregon and another that
would have replaced the com
mission with a single adminis
trator. Approved for passage was a
measure that would give maxi
mum penalties of $1000 fine and
a year in jail for a liquor com
mission employee accepting a
gift from someone doing business
with the commission.
