Cord Players Startled By Cock Pheasant
Gresham, Neb. (U.R) A cock
pheasant startled a group of
card players in Ralph's Place by
flying through the plate glass
window of the establishment.
One man, eager to take advan
tage of the opportunity, leaped
at the dazed bird with a skillet.
But the pheasant took off like
a shot, reversed its flight, and
went right through the opening
it had broken in the window.

Davis, back from the wilds of
Maine for her first movie in
three years,
told today how
a critical oper
ation kept her
off the screen
and nearly
spelled cur
tains for one
of filmdom's
first ladies.
The big-eyed
Aline Mosby Miss Davis, a
little curvier but still with her
.decisive gestures and dramatic
voice, brought a little life back
to Hollywood when she swept
into town to star in "Sir Walter
Raleigh" at 20th Century-Fox.
For three years she has been
living in virtual retirement near
Portland, Me., with her husband
actor Cary Merrill. But it was
not just the beauties of Maine
that kept her from the film cam
eras, she said.
Bon Tumor
"I was operated on two years
ago for a bone tumor on my
jaw," she explained as she rest
ed in her Bel-Air Hotel room
after a day of wardrobe tests at?
the studio.
"Two years ago last month,
and I'm only now recovered!. It
was a very strange experience.
I haven't been- in pictures be
cause I wasn't allowed to work.
I've been quite ill, but I'm much
better now. My face will always
be a little numb, I guess.
"It took me so long to get back
to feeling good. After such an
operation you have to rebuild
your entire system. Any doctor
will tell you there's no rougher
operation."
No scars are visible on the
famous Davis face, however. As
she was being fitted earlier at
the studio for 12 neck ruffs she'll
wear in the movie, she looked
much the same as she did when
she created the identical Queen
Elizabeth role in 1939 for "The
Private Lives of Elizabeth and
Essex."
"This always has been one of
my favorite parts," she said.
"They mentioned this film two
years ago and now that I'm

also seeing her husband's TV
show for the first time. For near
ly two years Merrill has com
muted by plane weekly to Ne
York for bis NBC-TV show, "Jus
tice." But his wife never had
seen it because the Portland sta
tion didn't get the program.
"So the other night I sat in
jmy hotel room here, turned on
the set and finally saw it, she
said with a laugh.

Plans for Separation

Froman has announced that she
and her husband, the Pan
American Airways pilot who
saved her from death in a
plane crash 12 years ago, have
decided "to separate for the
present."
Her husband, John Burn, is
in Acapulco, Mexico, on a one
month vacation.
