Italy Hopes To Become Big Brother To Arab Neighbors

er of under - developed Arab
neighbors around the southern
Mediterranean and the Middle
East.
Giuseppe Vedovato, top gov
ernment economist, has com
pleted a mission through the
Arab countries and has promis
ed to send at least 100 Italian
technicians to advise on a num
ber of projects the Arabs hope
to launch.
Vedovato visited such Ara
bian capitals as Damascus, Am
man, Baghdad, Beirut, Kuwait,
Gcdda, Kartoum, Cairo and Tri
poli as well as industrial or com
mercial centers like Alexandria
and Aqaba.
He reported friendliness to
ward expanded Italian com
merce and said the Arabs want
Italians technical aid.
No agreements were actually
signed, but members of his mis
sion who represented Italian
banking or industrial groups
made direct contacts with inter
ested persons in the various
countries.
Vedovato pointed, out that
Arab countries are primarily in
terested in Italian aid for con
struction of h y d r o-electric
plants, naval installations, . me
chanical and industrial facili
ties, railroads, highways and
public buildings.
Thus, Italy's big annual crop
of university-trained specialists
may be funneled into work on
projects around the Mediterran
ean. Vedovato gave numerous ex
amples of ways in which Italian
technicians can help Arabian
projects. In Jordan, he foresees
the raising of phosphate produc
tion from 40,000 to 500,000 tons
a year.
The Italian economist's plan is
to improve the, transportation
from mines to the port city of
Aqaba by means of a railroad or
a trucking highway, a construc
tion project which would em
ploy Arab common labor as well
as Italian specialists.
He also pointed out that Ital
ians could work on a proposed
giant dam on Jordan's river
Jarmuk, and on the irrigation
program for the fertile but arid
Jordan Valley. He also men
tioned the possibility of Italian
mining engineers going to Jor
dan to develop the rich potas-
