Fifth Amendment Declared Important
Chicago (U.R) Loyd Wright,
president o the American Bar
Association, said Friday night a
"police stale" would be threat
ened if the nation had no Fifth
Amendment to protect those
who fear self-incrimination.
But Wright told the Law Club
ef Chicago that the amendment
has the definite limitations of
. use only by a person who fears
prosecution for commission of a
crime. '
"The danger lies rather in the
Intentional misuse or the inad
vertent extension of the privi
lege to mask attempts to destroy
the . government," he said.
He said he believed it was in
consistent with the "candor"
required of both teachers and
lawyers for them to invoke the
Fifth Amendment.

miles south of here about l p.m. i

members survived.
A farmer, who told the state
patrol he saw the crash, said
the plane apparently ran out of

Ed Geary Ranks High as Speaker In House of Representatives
By BILL FORCE
United Press Correspondent -
Salem (U.R) There are
probably few persons in Salem
who would claim that Edward
A. Geary is the most imposing
speaker ever to preside over the
Oregon House of Representa-
HEARST STARTS JOB
Los Angeles (U.R) William
Randolph Hearst Jr., 47, began
his new dudes today as editor
in chief of the Hearst newspapers.

tives
But as the 48th biennial ses
sion moves along, more and
more members are beginning to
appreciate the ..quiet efficiency
Geary has brought to the be-hind-the-s
c e n e s manipulations
that are the substance of his job.
Long Service Record
Genial Ed Geary," the Klamath
Falls rancher with a long history
of service in . the state Legisla
ture, has trouble with the parlia
mentary niceties of presiding
from the speaker's i desk. The
members sometimes squirm
when his tongue gets tangled in
the pompous phrases that presid
ing officers are supposed to use.
The most pompous ones Geary
simply ignores, because he is not
a pompous man. And he is re
ported, to have said that he is
running the house this years ac
cording to "Geary rules."
Serving Fourth Term
Geary is serving his fourth
term as representative from
Klamath county. There is little
about the ; machinery of the
Legislature he doesn't know. It
is this knowledge of the funda
mentals that is making him so
valuable to this hard-pressed
session.
If Geary is unable, or unwill
ing, to sway the members to his
way of thinking -as he presides
at the rostrum, he has little
noticeable trouble .in moulding
legislative processes in the
friendly atmosphere of his of
fice behind the House chamber.
The smile that is the Geary
trademark comes easily . and
works effectively when he sits
down with committee chairmen
and political leaders to break a
log jam of bills in committee or
to smooth out an impending
wrangle. Geary never says "I
want." He says "I wonder if you
would."
In a. few weeks time now, the
first of a batch of hotly contro
versial tax measures will be hit
ting the floor for their first real
trial by the fire of debate. Tem
pers will be short and partisan
sentiment will be rife. That's
when Ed Geary's talent for fair
ness and congeniality -will be
brought into full play and will
best serve the interests of. his
state. : :
Born in Medford ...
Geary is a prosperous rancher
in Klamath county. Born in Med
ford and educated in Portland,
University of Oregon and Oregon
State College, he served as a
balloonist during World War I.
He moved to Klamath Falls after
his discharge from' the service
and early became a pioneer in
progressive agricultural
methods He was once chairman
of the State Board of Agri
culture. -
If "the : 60 speechemakers
Geary presides over in the house
refer to him not as a memorable
speaker but as a good guy, Ed.
Geary will be the last to object.
