At an appropriate moment in
the conversation I remarked that
the dinner plates had evidently
been in the family for some
time.
"Not at all," our hostess said.
"We got them last summer at
a small store.
"But these are Lenox plates,"
I said, somewhat disbelievingly.
"I know," our hostess nodded.
"That's why it was such a thrill
to get a full dozen and for only
$1 each."
I asked if she were aware of
their worth as well as their
beauty.
"Indeed, I am," she replied.
"When I saw the mark on the
bottom the C.A.C. in a wreath
above the word LENOX I
knew enough to get all of them
then and there."
The plates were of what is
known as soft paste porcelain
with a gold rim, plus embossed
flowers and leaf design. In the
center were some beautifully
painted yellow roses. Like all
Lenox products, or those with'

"It took a good half minute
foi me to figure out what I had,"
Jim said.
"There I was trying to imag
ine what kind of coin had
the cent mark surrounded by
wreathes " of cotton and sugar
cane that' came out of a couple
cf casks. I could tell it was a
bale of cotton between the casks,
but not even that helped me, so
finally I turned, it over.". . .
"And there you saw the words

rare?" I persisted,
"Well," Frank said, "very few
of these guns were imported to
America. And that's the reason.

them here. I tried to buy one
for a collector friend of mine
not long ago, and the owner
wanted $150 for it. That seemed
to me too much, but when I told
my friend about it, he insisted
we hurry back and get it.

purity being simply not good

"If you will note," the hostess
said, picking up one of the
plates, "the mark on these is in
gold. That means that these
were marked in the years from
1897 to 1906. A violet mark
would be for 1894 to 1896."
I asked if she had any Lenox
ware of the 1918 and 1932
periods when the firm was
chosen to provide china for the
White House.
"Some day I will," she said,
"but I want to get more of the
early period when the company
vas building up its reputation."
After a short pause she went
on. "It's worth so much more,
the earlier work,' I think like
this set for example. Why,
already we've been offered $180
for it."

"Naturally, under such cir
cumstances, I wasn't going to of
fer' any" fancy price. So I offered
the old fellow $10 for the Con
federate cent and about 40 other-
old coins take it or leave it,"
Jim said.
"Well, when I looked up the
Confederate cent, I found that
both the old man and I were
wrong. It wasn't catalogued at
$1,000 like he had said, nor was
it at the $10 I had guessed it.
Instead, it was listed at $100,
mine being the copper-nickel
type that is worth a little more
than the straight copper."

Annual 'Y' Auction Slated
To Raise Equipment Funds
The annual Medford YMCA
White Elephant" auction and
rummage and book sale will be
held March 12 at the YMCA
building, 522 West Sixth st., it
was announced Saturday.
. Purpose of the auction and
sales is to raise money for need-1
ed equipment, including wres
tling mats, a trampoline," paral
lel bars, swinging rings, a spring
board, basketballs, a diving
board for the swimming pool,
and to repair pool tables.
Medford area residents have
been asked to contribute un
wanted articles with enough
value to be auctioned, as well
as old clothing for the rummage
sale and books for the book
sale.
Will Pick Up
The articles may be delivered
to the YMCA building, or a
truck will pick them up. Pickup
service may be obtained by tele
phoning Medford 2-6295.
YMCA officials pointed out
that no money is available in
the "Y" budget to purchase the
needed equipment.
The YMCA facilities are heav
ily used by Medford area young
sters, and at the present time,
some of them have to stand
around watching others because
of the equipment shortage.

Jackson county residents are
among those who have extend
ed financial assistance and
pledged support to the proposed
1959-1960 Oregon Centennial
celebration, it was announced
Saturday by Charles F. Bollin
ger, Portland, secretary of the
Governor's Centennial commit
tee. Financial assistance and sup
port has been received from
every county in Oregon, with
quotas ranging from $250 to
$1,000, Bollinger said.
Members of the Portland fi
nance committee of the Centen
nial organization are now rais
ing a budget of $20,000, which
when added to a $10,000 up
state quota will be used for pay
ment of a survey to be handled
by the Stanford Research insti
tute. Findings of the first phase of
the survey will determine the
nature of the Centennial cele
bration planned by a general
committee.
