Turnabout Party
Slated Tonight
Camp White Members of
talent will present their annual
show for the volunteers, who
furnish entertainment the rest
of the year, at the Turnabout
Party to be held in the theatre
tonight.
Members will be "guests"
slong with the VAVS' represen
tatives this year. Those who' do

have witnessed the "rehearsal."

' ciation for 100 hours service.

Off-Shore Platform
Holds Buildings
For Oil Drilling
Maracaibo (U.R) Something
new has been added to Vene
zuela's Lake Maracaibo where
oil derricks sprout out of the
water like the trees in a forest.
It is a platform about the size
of a football field, resting 14
feet above the lake's waters on
3.r0 concrete piles driven into
the lake bed.
On the platform, seven miles
offshore in the midst of the der
rick "forest," are buildings that
house huge engines, elaborate
control panels and other en
gineering devices.
It's the Creole Petroleum Cor
poration's new gas conservation
plant which was dedicated re
cently. Its job is to boost the
already rich yield of crude oil
in the Lake Maracaibo basin,
which now provides 10 per cent
of the world's petroleum. This
is how it works:
- The natural gas which always
comes up with crude oil in drill
ing operations is separated and
piped to the unique plant on
the platform.
There the huge machines take
ever and shoot the gas at terrific
pressure back down to below
the lake bottom, where what
engineers call "the oil producing
formation" is located.
Miles of Pipe
This formation is a tilted bed
of three sections of sandstone,
about 9,800 acres in area. The
vital oil is in the lower and
middle parts of the formation.
The gas, shot back into the well
at great pressure, forces the oil
into wells at the "bottom" end
of the tilted slab.
This oil, which would not be
obtainable otherwise, then is
piped up. It helps maintain
Venezuela as the third greatest
petroleum-producing nation of
the world, outranked only by the
United States and Russia.
Creole Petroleum engineers,
who have overcome many prob
lems in bringing oil up through
62 to 65 feet of water from the
lake bottom, really had a tough
one in piping it to the "new
look" plant.
The job involved laying about
12 miles of pipe on the floor of
the lake to carry the gas from
eight "flow stations" where it
is separated from the oil. The
pipes had to be 24 to 30 inches in
size, which made them buoyant
in the lake waters.
The buoyancy problem was
solved by encasing each pipe in
concrete to hold it to the bottom
of the lake. By that process,
each foot of 30-inch pipe
weighed 562 pounds.

quires great tact.

he has joined the Army. Will
they put his teeth in? I don't

rasses me to be seen with him;

pened to some extent.
I do not know what the Army
regulations are about replacing
missing teeth when they were
missing at ; the time of enlist
ment. He can easily find out.
The doctor who examined him
when he enlisted undoubtedly
mentioned the matter.
You do not say what the ac
cident was that caused him to
lose his teeth. If it was an auto
mobile accident," did he have in
surance to cover injuries, or did
the other driver carry insurance?
He may have looked into this
before he joined the Army.
When " you mention the mat
ter, be sure to use real tact. Do
not imply that you are embar
rassed to be seen with him. He
could easily interpret this to
mean thst you did not really
love him. Put your emphasis on
his welfare, not on your feel
ings. " " " ' " ;
If you are as good friends as
your reference to him as your
"boyfriend" would imply, you
should not hesitate to mention
the matter.-1 am sure it' is a
source of real concern to him; he
may be wondering why you
have not shown your concern
too.
