Malibu Owner Tells Plans for Expansion
Los Angeles One of the
biggest overall expansion moves
in the history of Pacific Coast
sport fishing, involving an ex
penditure of nearly $500,000,
was announced today for Mali
bu by its owner, Bill Huber.
The program ranges from in
creasing the fishing fleet, to the
building of a motel, swank res
taurant and modernized shops
at the gateway to the Malibu
Sport Fishing pier. : Total cost
for purchases already made and
others soon to be completed, plus
the building program, come to
$436,000, Huber said.
Already purchased is a fleet
of 20 14-foot, v-bottom craft,
each equipped with a brand new
outboard motor, and a 14 by
40 foot float. This new operation
begins April 1.
American private investment
in Canada is now $8,000,600,000
an increase of 72 per cent in the
past 10 years, reports the 1955
Book of Knowledge Annual.

ing has a bet
ter life expec
ancy and later
advent of in

the workman
with heart disease who quits his
job and just vegetates in the de
lusion that physical activity,
exercise, work is "dangerous"
cr "bad" for a "weak" heart.
Even doctors with 19th cen
tury training seem to harbor
the notion that physical activity
must be restricted or avoided
altogether if the individual has
any kind of heart disease. And
some old timers have never
learned that graduated exercise
is essential in the successful
treatment of most cases of heart
disease, be it valvular ("leak
age") incompetency, angina pec
toris, coronary thrombosis or
whatnot.
I told here about the 32-vear-
old man with aortic valve insuf
ficiency (backward leakage) and
mitral valve stenosis (narrowing
or constriction of opening from
left aurice into left ventricle)
either of which valvular defects
entitles many a man with the
kind of co-operation his his doc
tor, , to retire on a partial dis
ability basis who has com
peted successfully in fourteen
marathon races, always running
the full distance of 26 to 54 miles
and winning one, namely, the
South African elimination race
in the British Empire Games in
'34. (Case recorded in JAMA,
2, 10, '40).
This and other instances of
tremendous physical effort and
endurance by persons with
valvular heart ' defects, angina
pectoris or coronary occlusion
(cited here from time to time)
do not indicate that vigorous
exercise or athletic comnefition
or heavy manual labor is the
best treatment for heart disease.
But they do indicate that there's
something wrong with the ad
vice so often given by nine
teenth century rjhvsicians still
in active practice, namely,' that
the individual with any kind of
heart disease spend the rest of
his life leafing, sponging on
sympathetic relatives, walking
on eggs and playing the invalid
to evade all duties and responsibilities.
I have stated "many time that
graduated exercise is at least as
essential as. rest and'or medica
tion in the successful treatment
of any kind of heart trouble.
This is not just my notion; it is
the consensus of recognized
medical authorities as no one
will venture to deny." But the
truth doesn't cramp the style of
the doctors who conspire with
heart disease patients or em
barrass the iatrogenic invalids
