Prestige off Tornado
At Stake at Klamath
Pressure is off but the desire
to win will still provide incer
tive, between two longtime
rivals tonight and Saturday
when the Medford high Black
Tornado, already wearing the
Southern Oregon Conference
basketball diadem, encounters
the Klamath union high Peli
cans in an anti-climax league
wind-up basketball series at
Klamath Falls.
Winning won't be all-important
this week end for the Tor
.nado. But the No. 1 rated prep
contingent in Oregon isn't ex
pected to letdown, because its
prestige could suffer. With no
official title at stake, aim of the
Medfordites will be just to play
good hard basketball the best
they know how. That's the re
port from a team source.
Other than its prestige, the
Black Tornado has a long un
beaten streak to protect and a
chance to complete its confer
ence season without a loss. And
the impressive record and high
ranking of Medford in the press
polls gives Klamath something
to work for. The Pels would like
nothing better than to end the
Medford triumph string 4at 18
straight and join the Eugene
Axemen as only conquerors of
Medford.
In the previous series between
the two clubs Medford won 64
to 51 the first night and 70 to
43 seconds. The first tussle was
the toughest for the Tornado up
to that time in the conference.
And history could repeat.
Toned Down Tornado
In the first fray in January
Klamath fought Medford on
even terms under the back
boards, succeeded in toning
down its fast break and occa
sionally wrecking its more de
liberate attack. In the second
mix, the Pels, who more than
match the Tornado in overall
altitude, stayed with Medford
in a spirited first half.
However, Medford's finer

Evergreen Bowling League
rolled right along this week with
Pierce Freightlines still in first
place, but being pressed by a
hard-driving squad of Barbers
and by Swift Co. No tenia dares
relax, or may find itself out of
the race.
Pierce took the high scoring
Bel Air Chevs, who could not
get to rolling this week, after
rolling nearly 2600 last week.
Swede Larson was top man for
Pierce with 532.
Swift kept pace with a 4-0
series over the Big Y Super
Market, when the Ray Speer of
the Big Y could not get a
strike for his poorest evening in
months. Fritz Kunz of Swift was
high with a 514.
Medford Barbers fell a bit
by a split with Sherwin-Williams
Painters, but the Frank Kirk
held his average and better with
a 561 series.
Tru-Mix and City Hall split,
with handicap playing a large
part. Final series was won 3-1
by Jorgensen's dairy over First
National bank. The Bankers got
only three men to roll and lost
on handicap. Hal Ellis had a
521 for Dairy. His- missed a 200
game by one pin.

pace and its slicker, sharper
shooting and passing crushed
Pelican threats. Klamath, like
many Medford foes, lacked stay
ing power and the ability to
surge in the clutch. Those attri
butes have been important in
Medford successes this season.

pected to call on the usual Med
ford starting five, Glenn Peter
son, Jerry Kalapus, Bud Kast
ner, Larry Copple and Frank
Rector. Latest reports from
Klamath is that Coach Don
Peterson will open with Guy
Munsell, Larry - Yarnell, Dave
D'Olivo, Jack Sunitsch and
Danny Lowe.
Junior varsity teams will play
prelims both nights. Medford
and Klamath Falls ninth grades
were to battle this afternoon.

featherweight title fight at Mad
ison Square Garden.
For the first time in nearly
three and cne-half years, string
bean Saddler of New York will
be risking his crown after par
ing down to the 126-pound limit.
No other champion in the 66
year history of the feather divi
sion ever kept his title in the
mothballs so long.
No other champion in any
division ever boasted as high a
knockout average for more than
100 fights as Saddler's .641, re
sulting from 98 kayoes in 153
bouts. And no other challenger
in any division ever was charged
with as many defeats as the 47
in 108 bouts for Davis of Hart
ford, Conn.
There was widely shared sus
picion that skinny Saddler : may
be as weak as a starved cat be
cause of weight-making tortures,
not endured since his last de
dense against Willie Pep, Sept.
6, 1951.
Davis has won solid support
by six straight victories in 1954,
the first unbeaten year of his
career. In Red Top's last fight
on Nov. 26, he became chal
lenger by winning a lopsided 12

Talent, Rogue River Clash
For County B Toga Tonight
Final basketball action within
the Jackson County B League,
itself, is slated here tonight and,
with stakes running high, the
scramble could turn into the top
one of the year in the circuit.
Talent and Rogue River high
schools battle at the St. Mary's
school gymnasium. They're out
to break the tie that resulted at
the end of the regular league
schedule. Prize will be the
county championship and the
right to tackle Malin next week
for the District 5B diadem.
Game time tonight is at 8
o'clock. There will be a 6:30
o'clock preliminary between
junior varsities.
Beat Each Other
The Bulldogs of Talent and
Chiefs of Rogue River wound up
in the regular loop contention
with 9-1 records. Their losses
were to each other. Each won
on its home court, Talent by a
decisive margin.
Rogue River hopes to come
through with a hot shooting of
which it is capable. Chieftain
strength against Talent lies
more in its offense than in its
defense. The Bulldogs are strong
under the backboards. They
have the best defensive record
in the loop. They have a strong
offense, too, topping the whole
circuit in points scored against
rivals.
Talent is the defending champ
but Rogue River is no stranger

Have Four-Game Leads

Association schedule only 17
days away from completion for
the 1954-55 season, the Syracuse
Nationals and the Fort Wayne
Pistons today held almost in
surmountable four-game leads
in the Eastern and Western .di
visions, respectively. -
The Nationals picked up
ground on the idle New York
Knickerbockers and a full game
on the slumping Boston Celtics
by trouncing the Rochester
Royals Thursday night, 97-83,
while the Pistons sprinted to an
easy 95-85 victory over the Mil
waukee Hawks.
In the only other game played,
the Mineapolis Lakers buried
the Celtics, 112-98. by scoring 63
points in the second half .
