Weed Control Meet Slafed for March 17
A weed control meeting for
aerial and ground sprayers and
dusters will be held in Medford
Jackson county agent.
The meeting will open at 10
a.m., and will adjourn in mid
afternoon. Speakers will include

Southern Oregon is possessed
of a landmark Table Rock
which provided the setting for a
famous incident in the colorful
history of dealing with the
Indians.
When General Joseph Lane
led a delagation of 10 men to the
top of the rock in 1853, to nego
tiate the treaty with Chief Joe
of the rebellious tribe which had
been causing trouble in the val
ley, one of the members of the
party was a young captain of
volunteers, J.W. Nesmith.
Today his grandson Linn W.
Nesimth is a World War I vet
eran living at Camp White.
Nesmith writes background
stories of the war experiences
and other interesting phases of
the lives of domiciliary members
for the Oregon Legionnaire.
Only a few intimates know that
it was his grandfather who
furnished the most dramatic ges
ture that sealed the peace in
the Rogue valley for years to
come.
It was agreed that the men
would go aloft to the Indian
camp unarmed. And when they
came in the presence of the chief

skipped out to get married. For
a year Sheree has been yanked
in and out of casting announce
ments, depending on whether
Marilyn was speaking to the
studio that week.
After Marilyn announced she
wanted to play in "The Brothers
Karamazov" the studio sus
pended her again and Sheree
won another hand-me-down Mon
roe role, co-starring with Betty
Grable in "How To Be Very,
Very popular." Unlike Sheree's
other announced roles, this one
is actually getting on celluloid.
Script Sharp
"But I'm doing this part my
way," Sheree said firmly as
she walked on the set for her
first movie job. "If I'm ever
going to be known, it will have
to be my way."
Nunnally Johnson, the pro
ducer, director and writer of the
picture, originally wrote it as a
custom-job for Marilyn. To
tailor it for Sheree, he explained
he switched the script from
"Blah" to "Sharp."
"For example, the girl's open
ing line was 'Blah' you know,
wide-eyed, like Marilyn. To suit
Sheree, I made it a sharp line,"
he said.
"And Sheree," he added 'firm
ly in memory of the open
mouthed Monroe, "will not act
like Marilyn. She has been in
structed to play the entire part
with her mouth shut."
Sheree actually has her own
type of wiggle and behaves not
at all like Marilyn. The wise
cracking dancer is more like a
blonde, sexy Eve Arden.
Walk in Rain
For the first scene Sheree
and Betty Grable (her injured
knee still in a brace) had to walk
in a man-made rain on the set.
Water even spouted from pipes
that framed the camera. The two
blondes were thoroughly soaked,
clothes and all, before they
stepped before the camera .in
the downpour.
After one day of this wet
work, flipped Sheree, "I'm be
ginning to wish Marilyn would
come back!"
"This rain! I dunno, maybe
they can have this business. And
this six o'clock in the morning
bit," she groaned.
"But I won't feel as if I've
really done anything until I
see the results on the screen.
"It's almost a year since the
studio signed me. And all I've
done so far is publicity."

Fathers Out of Work
Portland (U.R) Theft of a
motor and a fan in a weekend
burglary at a paper-shredding
plant here left 11 fathers out of
work today.
The shredding plant, operated
by the Oregon Institute of Social
Welfare, has been employing 11
heads of families1 recently
dropped from public welfare
roles. '
Dr. Floyd K. Dover, institute
president, said that no funds
were available to replace the
stolen machinery. r . .,

From Camp White

wow, there was much wavering
over the decision. Finally, the
chief spoke up and agreed "to the
terms. He was convinced because
Captain Nesmith had reached
into his jacket to grasp the
hunting knife which was not
visible, but was understood by
Chief Joe, beside whom Nesmith
crouched.
Linn Nesmith was born two
years after his grandfather died.
The family had moved to Polk
county and he knew little or
nothing of the incident at Table
Rock until he had grown up.
He was naturally stimulated by
the accounts of the exploit,
which he uncovered when he
came to live in southern Oregon.
Captain Nesmith afterward
was made a colonel in the vol
unteers. In 1861, he was elected
by the legislature to serve in
the United States Senate. Later,
he was elected by the people to
be a congressman-at-large.
Linn dees recall one story
which was part of his family
tradition, in remarks made to a
minister, who commented on
the impressive oration Colonel
Nesmith gave at the funeral of
General Lane.
"I noticed," the minister ob
served, "that you spoke glow
ingly of General Lane in his life
on earth, but you said nothing
of the hereafter."
"Reverend," Colonel Nesmith
answered, "I never say anything
about things I don't know any
thing about."
Being a little skeptical as well
as practical, seems to be a fam
ily characteristic.
Linn Nesmith likes to be
shown, and so not long ago, one
of the doctors, who also wanted
to see the place where the
Treaty of Table Rock was ne
gotiated, took him along and
there they examined the marker
giving the names of the 11 men
who went to the top "unarmed"
to meet the warring Indians.
Now, Nesmith carries a photo
graph of himself, beside the
marker on the spot where his
grandfather placed the family
name in the history books.
Washington's Birthday was
observed quietly at Camp White,
with no special activity sched
uled and few taking advantage
of the "long weekend" to be
away. The only special event
planned was the dance held Mon
day night under auspices of the
VFW Auxiliary.

Ex-French Diplomat, Playwright Sucumbs
Paris 4U.R) Paul Claudel,
who won acclaim as a diplomat
and a playwright, died yester
day. He was 86.
Claudel served in the French
diplomatic service on four con
tinents, culminating his career
in the top overseas post of am
bassador to the United States
from 1927 to 1933.
Although most of his plays
were written to be read, several
of them have achieved stage suc
