System Output Up
By 15 Per Cent
Portland (U.R) Bonneville
Power Administration facilities
handled a record 20.2 billion
kilowatt hours of electrical en
ergy produced by dams of the
Columbia river system during
fiscal 1954.
This represents an increase of
15 per cent over 1953. Bonne
ville, in its 17th annual report,
gives major credit for the in
crease in power production to
addition of nine units of gen
eration at Big Cliff-Detroit dam
on the Santiam river in Oregon,
Hungry Horse dam on the Flat
head river in Montana and Mc-
Nary dam on the Columbia.
Record Gross Revenue .
. BPA also realized record gross
operating revenues of $45,317,-
693. Net revenues, however, de
clined 9.72 per cent from the
previous year, largely because
of higher costs of new dams
going into service and growth
of the administration's transmis
sion system, the report said.
Customers during 1954 in
cluded 79 publicly-owned utili
ties, seven privately-owned utili-

agencies. These consumed a
' total of 18.8 billion kilowatt
hours.
6.377 Circuit Miles
- At the end of the fiscal year,
BPA was operating 6,377 cir
cuit miles of transmission lines
and 158 substations, an increase
of 670 miles of line and 13 substations.
Looking to the future, Admin
istrator William A. Pearl said
"There : is every reason to be
lieve the power requirements of
the Pacific Northwest can be
met through the new generation
contemplated under the partner
ship program and construction
of recommended federal multi
purpose projects such as Libby
dam."

Remedies for Common Cold Gathered
From All Over World; None Guaranteed
New York (U.R) This is
for bleary-eyed cold sufferers,
who will be excused if they have
to lay down their newspapers
and blow their noses halfway
through the story.
No, there is not a new "mir
acle" cure for colds. Larry Kaz
of New York, who inspired this
essay, is an authority on old
cures, strange ones, and he ad
mits it would be a miracle if
any of them worked.
But in desperation you might
like to try one.
Kaz, who has rounded up cold
cures from all over, said his
favorite comes from the Scot
tish highlands. You catch a spid
er, tie it in a piece of muslin
around your neck. When the
spider goes, so does your cold.
In nearby Ireland, according
to Kaz, they don't have anything
to do with spiders. There, it's
beetles.
"In Donegal county," he said,
"the traditional way to get rid
of the sniffles is to put a beetle
in a bottle. When the beetle dies,
the patient has lost his cold."
If you are squeamish about
insects, try an old Pennsylvania
Dutch remedy. The head of a
fresh fish is stuffed in the pa
tient's mouth and left there un
til the nasal passages are clear
ed. This tends to isolate the pa
tient after a while, which is
probably hygienic.

of the remedies in the Kaz col

U.S. Expected To Take Refugees From Far East
Manila (U.R) A ranking
American diplomat said yesterday
the United States will shortly
start taking in refugees from
Communist territories of the
Far East who are in the Philip
pines. Roland Kenney, American
consul in Taipeh and director of
the Far Eastern Refugee pro
gram, said the U.S. plans to
take in 9000 refugees from far
eastern countries. Some 400
have already left for the U.S.
since the program began last
July, he said.

A Traffic Stopper '
The most dramatic cure comes
from Bosnia. A cold suffered is
told to lie down, spread-eagle
fashion, at the nearest cross
roads. A copper coin is placed
under his head. He is supposed
to lie there until the cold clears
up, although this cure has gone
out of fashion somewhat since
the advent of automobiles.
Kaz scoffs at all these methods
but he likes to spread them
around as propaganda for elec
tric vaporizers. He manufactures
vaporizers and is anxious to
point out how convenient it is
to plug one in and sniff your
cares away.
Vaporizers are not new, by
the way. Peasants in Germany
have been treating colds for ages
by sniffing the fumes of boiling
beer.
Mother Confesses To Dismembering Bodies of Sons
Houston, Tex. (U.R) The
brutally dismembered bodies of
two young boys were found in
a shallow grave near here yester
day and the victims' mother, a
five-and-dime store clerk, non
chalantly told police that she had
butchered them.

Openings Announced
The United States Civil Ser
vice commission today announc
ed examinations for two types
of positions with the federal
government.
Vacancies now exist for la
boratory general mechanics in
various grades with positions in
the Bureau of Mines at Albany,
Ore. The duties include mechan
ical work in connection with
design, development, fabrica
tion, installation, maintenance,
test, and experimental operation
of mineral technology equip
ment. Applicants also are sought to
fill positions as junior govern
ment assistants with openings in
Oregon, Washington, Idaho and
Montana, with an entrance sal
ary of $3,410 a year. The ex
amination is for the purpose of
recruiting outstanding young
people for careers leading to
high level positions in field in
stallations of the federal gov
ernment. Further details may be obtain
ed at the Medford post office. '
Mrs. Ann Williams, 28, made
the admission to Sheriff C V.
"Buster" Kern after officers
trailed her through the night
and battered down a rooming
house door at 4 a.m. to capture
her. -
Mrs. Williams denied killing
the boys, Calvin, 9, and Conrad,
8, but she confessed carving up
their small bodies with a razor
blade, officers said.
She was charged with murder.
Mrs. Williams told police the
boys died of an overdose of a
narcotic, but officers said an
autopsy report showed the boys
died of fractured skulls, appar
ently beaten in by a blunt in-,
strument. . ;
The boys' dissected bodies,
wrapped in layers of plastic and
cotton sheeting, were found be
hind an auto repair shop.
