Atomic, Hydrogen Weapons. May Join Poison
as Status
Senator Sees Horror
Classification for
Future Nuclear Arms
Washington U.R) Sen. Albert Gore said today that atomic
and hydrogen weapons soon may join poison gas in the arsenal
of horror weapons which nobody dares to use.
But the youthful Tennessee Democrat cautioned that the sit
uation offers no "warranty of peace." It should not, he said, be
a reason for junking nuclear arms. .-
And, as to Russia's proposal that all nations destroy their
atomic and hydrogen weapons, Gore called it "a propaganda
splurge" and an impractical one at that. "1
A member of the Joint Congressional Atomic Energy - Com
mittee, Gore was interviewed by United Press in the wake of the
Soviet disarmament proposal.
"How should the United States react to the Soviet proposal?"

Should Welcome Genuine
Offer Of Disarmament
"Well, we should welcome any
genuine offer of disarmament,
but it takes only a brief analy
sis to expose this as a propa
ganda splurge," Gore said.
"Why have they steadfastly
refused to enter into any inter
national agreement? Why have
they refused to agree to effect
ive international inspection that
could'test compliance?" he ask
ed. ,
This time, he was reminded,
the Russians held out the pros
pect of appropriate international
controls.
"I'm sure they'd be "approp
riate from the Soviet point of
view," he replied drily..
How does this new Soviet of
fer relate to their recent boast
of hydrogen bomb superiority?"
"The same purpose seems to
have prompted both," the Sen
ator said. " '
"One week they boast that
they're ahead, iff H-bomb de
velopment and the next week
they suggest that everybody des
troy their nuclear stockpiles."
"There should be no effective
date in a matter of this kind,"
he continued. "Real disarma
ment can not be pegged to
strength as of a given date but
rather to a goal of comparative
equality which would promote
peace.
"And the United States can
not give up any of its weap
ons its equalizers until that
kind of disarmament can . be
achieved."

Professor Seeking
Glass Pig Model
Manhattan, Kan.- (U.R) A
Kansas professor is looking for
a bottle one shaped like a pig.
Dr. C. S.' Aubel of the Kansas
State College department of ani
mal husbandry has a 25-year col
lection of model pigs. Now he is
learching for a pig-bottle.
"I have only seen two glass
bottle models of pigs in the
United States," he said. "But I
still hope to get one for. my col
lection." ,
Dr. Aubel has more than 100
model pigs, "every one with a
story behind it."
One of his outstanding items
is a carved jade model from
China. It formerly was used as
an amulet.
He also has a wooden model
of a pig from Rhodesia, a carved
model from the Philippines with
the professor's name engraved
thereon, a carved model from
Russia and two china . models
known to be centuries old.
Models in the collection are
of wood, glass, ivory, porcelain,
bone, jade, peat, seashell, metals,
china, clay and rubber.
Dr. Aubel has worked with
hogs at K-State since 1915. He
still heads the swine program
at the college.
He keeps a file of clippings of
unusual hog incidents dating
back 30 years. The grand cham
pion barrow he showed at the
International , Livestock exhibi
tion in 1929 is shown in metal
silhouettee on his home mail
box, and a mural painted on his
barn shows a Kiaw River Valley
scene complete with pigs, of
course.

Not Stalemate
"I wouldn't call it a stale
mate," he said, "but all nations
may now be approaching the
treatment of nuclear weapons
which they gave to the use of
poison gas after World War I.
"The meaning of this should
not be misundestood. It should
not be misinterpreted as a war
ranty of peace. International
commitments against the use of
poison gas did not prevent
World War II."
Atom Warheads Seen
On Shipboard Missiles
.. Cincinnati (U.R) Adm. Rob
ert B. Carney said today nuclear
progress is reaching the point
where shipboard guided missiles
"could be tipped with atomic
warheads" for defense against
air attack.'
Carney, chief of naval opera
tions also said atomic power
plants for aircraft are closer
than had been anticipated and
may have "attractive possibil
ities" in sea planes.
He predicted that atomic pro
pulsion will become "common
place in our Navy." .
His speech was a vigorous
reply to recent criticims of air
craft carriers by British Field
Marshal Montgomery, and ; sug
gestions by U.S. Air Force offi
cials that sea transport would
be hamstrung by enemy ., sub
marines at the start of a war. '
Security Program
Order Attacked

member of the Subversive Activ
ities Control board said last
night President Eisenhower's se
curity program "has swung too
far on the side of injustice."
Former Sen. Harry P. Cain,
(R-Wash.), criticized a key -part
of the President's order setting
up the program as "too harsh
and difficult of reasonable administration."
Said Badly Handled
At the same time, Rep. Mar
tin Dies (D-Tex.), former chair
man of the House un-American
Activities committee, charged
the program had been "badly
handled." Two members of the
Hoover commission also clashed
over the program.
The Cain-Dies charges came as
Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey (D
Minn.), announced hearings will
open March 3 on a resolution
introduced by himself and Sen.
John G. Stennis (D-Miss.), call
ing for creation of a bipartisan
commission to study the whole
security question. .
Mr. Eisenhower has frowned
on the special commission ap
proach! He said recently that
the program is under continuing
study by . a special division in
the Justice department. .
Cain criticized the provision
in Mr. Eisenhower's order, of
April 27, 1953, which requires
that federal employment be
"clearly consistent with the na
tional interest."
Made Too Easy
"It makes it .too-easy-to re
solve doubt in favor of he gov
ernment and overlooks the im
portance of the the human be
ing," Cain said.
Cain's attack came in an in
terview with Rep. Harold C.
Ostertag (R-N.Y.).

helicopter designed to track
aown and destroy submarines,
the company registered an avia

This first sub-chasing helicop
ter Is now undergoing .extensive
tests, but the company expects
to make deliveries 'to the Navy
early in 1955.,The craft was de
veloped in Bell's local plant, but
proaiction is centered in the Ft.
Worth, Tex. plant,

'copter is equipped with sonar
detection equipment that can
be dipped into the sea to "listen
for subs. It also carries light
weight "homing", weapons that
follow through in destroying the
tracked-down enemy submarines.
It is capable of speeds up to
138 miles an hour, or can hover
motionless while it nintioints a
sub's location before discharging

tax.
Herman D. Kennis, member of
the AFM's national executive
board, said bar owners would
distribute printed literature to
their customers explaining why
they are being charged more
and asking to protest to . their
congressmen.
Kennis labeled the tax as dis
criminatory during a speech be
fore the western states music
