No Honor In Keeping
Piomise To Paramour
Promises should be considered
solemn trusts. However, when
they are made by people who
have no right to make them they
can hardly be regarded as sacred.
(Q) "Some years ago my
husband was sick and went to
a doctor. He fell in love with .
the doctor's helper and has

ever since. I learned thai he
promised her never to break
it up.
"Now he recognixes his mis
take. She knew all the time he
was a married man but is try
ing to hold him to his promise.
He has paid her plenty with
gifts and money all these
years. Can this promise be
broken? I have never tried

a man , with a

children would
not be having an affair with an
other woman if he had a strong
sense of honor and responsibili

Your husband was not free to
make the promise he made. He
had already promised, in his
marriage vows, to put you before
all others regardless of circum
stances. .
Unless your husband has writ
ten letters to this woman, prom
ising that he will never leave
her, she wouldn't have a leg to
stand on if she tried to force him
to divorce you. Therefore, urge
your husband to break off his
relationship with this woman and
try to set an example as a good
father for the sake of his child

Your Health and Its Care
y DR. WILLIAM 1RADT, M.D.
Readers should addreis inquiries to: William Brady,
263 El Camino, loverly Hills, Calif.
TOBACCO
Anoxia means without oxy
gen, oxygen lack, insufficient
oxvsen. oxygen deficit in the
cells, tissues
and organs.
Sometimes psy
sicians refer to
anoxia in a
p a r t i c u
lar area, say in
vital brain cen
ters or the
heart muscles,
as ischemia.
Dr. Brady Then there is
the older, more familiar term,
asphyxia, which means literally
no throb, no breathing, suffoca
tion. The importance of anoxia is
indicated by the fast that some
good physicians today believe an
gina pectoris (breast pang) is
due to anoxia in the area of the
heart (muscle) to which a branch
of the coronary artery deliv
ers or should deliver oxygen
via the blood, of course. The best
and quickets relief for anginal
distress i3 nitroglycerin, a tab
let containing l100th of a grain
placed under the tongue, which is
absorbed and acts as quickly
as any hyporedmic injection can
be; nitroglycerin relieves the dis
tress by relaxing, dilating or
opening up the contracted coro
nary artery branch or rather
its smallest terminals (arterio
les), thus permitting delivery of
the needed oxygen to the heart
muscle.
It may be true, although I
have never seen evidence' of it,
that nicotine in tobacco accounts
for the ill effects of excessive
smoking. Chemical analyses
show that various kinds of to
bacco contain from 1 to 5 or 6
per cent of nicotine, whereas
chemical analyses of tabacco
smoke show little or no nico
tine the nicotine in the tobac
co is destroyed by combustion.
But this trifling discrepancy
doesn't worry the old timers
at all. Once they have pronoun
ced an opinion, you had better
swallow it without question.
Otherwise you're likely to get a
kick in the teeth.
There are many reports of ill
effects of excessive use of tobac
co in current medical literature,
in most instances' from cigarette
smoking, in some instances from
cigar smoking, but only rarely
from pipe smoking' and I can
not recall that I have ever seen
or read of a case of serious ill ef
fects from chewing tobacco. Not
that the habit of chewing is to
be commended if one associates
with human beings, but if the old
timers are right and the chemists
are not kidding, a fellow who de
cides to take a chew of tobacco
ought to make his will and call
the coroner first.
What really accounts for the
ill effects of smoking, as the
scientific evidence indicates, is
the carbon monoxide in the
smoke, or to state it precisely,
the anoxia produced by. inhala
tion of even a minute quantity
of carbon monoxide. This holds
true whether it be the awful
sickness many youngsters suf
fer from ther first adventure in
smoking or the condition called
thrombo-angiitis obliterans (Bu
erger's disease..) which is prob
ably due to excessive cigarette
smoking, although physicians
have reported cases in non-smokers.-
The blood of normal ' indivi
duals in industrial communities
contains a small amount of car
bon monoxide, about 1.5 sat
uration, but the blood of smok

. For two years my tongue ha been
very sore and fiery red. It feels as if
it had been scorched. Consulted sev
eral doctors and received numerous
shcts of vitamin B without any re
sult. . . (Mrs. E. S.)

a month or so. Also send stamped,

silly to take "shots" of vitamin B if
you can still swaUow anything. Vita
mins taken in the ordinary way are
as effective as they are at S3.50 a dose.
Acne, Blackheads and Pimples
I sought your help years ago when
daughter had acne. You sent me a
pamphlet and we used a lotion con
taining lavender, for one thing. It
cleared the trouble up in no time.
Now I have lost the recipe. . . Mrs.

Answer Lavender is difficult to
obtain now, so witch hazel has been
substituted. Send stamped, self-ad-dre?ed
