Hill Says Critics
Have Ruined Ike's
School Aid Plans
Washington U.R) Sen.
Lister Hill said Saturday that
criticism by experienced educa
tors has made a "wreck" of Pres
ident Eisenhower's program of
federal aid for helping states
build more schools.
The Alabama Democrat Is
chairman of the Senate Labor
committee which has been con
sidering the President's school
construction blueprint. Hill's
committee was told Friday that
top educators in 37 states are
critical of the plan.
- "This thing is a wreck after
the testimony of experienced ed
ucators," Hill claimed.
Hill, himself an opponent of
the administration plan, is spon
soring a bill of his own which
emphasizes outright federal
grants rather than the loan pro
grams favored by the adminis
tration. President Eisenhower has rec
ommended that the government
put up $1,120,000,000 almost
all of it in loans to spur a to
tal federal-state-local outlay of

THe Story that
Silence Tells !
You'll probably never hear a 1955 Cadillac! It is so
wonderfully quiet in operation that you can detect
only the soft whisper of the wind . . . and, occasion
ally,' the pleasant song of the tires on.the pavement.
; Insofar as the car itself is concerned, there is
only silence! ";
But listen, if you will, to the remarkable story
this silence tells about the "car of cars."
: "Here," it says, "is a mechanism so flawlessly
designed and so faultlessly engineered that every
component performs with absolute perfection.
"Here is truly scientific styling so basically good
and sound that there is literally no noticeable resist
ance from wind or road. :: . ; .
"And here is craftsmanship so superb and so pains
taking that not a trace of vibration can be heard."
And how eloquently it speaks of the satisfactions
of Cadillac ownership!
It testifies to the rest and relaxation to be found
at the wheel. It promises peace of mind . . . and
greater driving safety. And it pledges dependability
and endurance and economy of operation.
. -. V .. -, ' '- '.-,. "., -'" "' .,
Clearly, no one can tell the Cadillac story as well
or as convincinglyas the car itself! ;
. And if you haven't as yet "heard" this remarkable
story, we hope that you will accept bur invitation
to come in and spend an hour at the wheel. .
You'll agree, we're certain, that the 1955 Cadillac i
is its own best spokesman!

Horses and Women
How long should it take a bus
iness girl to dress in the morning
so as to be all ready to start for
the office? Opinions differ wide
ly as to this. Anyway, the bugle
call for WACs is 6 a.m. They get
twenty minutes to dress. Average
secretary takes twenty-five min
utes, Receptionists take half an
hour. Latter are slowest dressers
among business girls.
Get It Right
The first name of that hatchet
swinging reformer whose last
name was Nation is repeatedly
spelled "Carrie." That's wrong.
Should be Carry. That is with a
"Y." Her maiden name was
Carry Amelia Moore. Most of her
campaigning took place in Kan
sas but she was born in Ken
tucky. Her first husband was Dr.
Charles Floyd, her second was
David Nation. She obtained a
divorce from Mr. Nation after
twenty-four years of marriage.
Brevity
What was the best speech you
ever heard? How long did the
speaker talk? Edward Everett
was chosen principal speaker for
the dedication of . the Soldiers'
Cemetery at Gettysburg, Pa., in
1863. He talked for one hour
and fifty-seven minutes. His
speech was forgotten. Then Abra
ham Lincoln arose and spoke for
barely five minutes. His speech
was that masterpiece of brevity,
the immortal "Gettysburg Ad
