Your Health and Its Care
By DR. WILLIAM BRADY, M.D.
Readers should address inquiries to: William Brady,
263 El Camino, Beverly Hills, Calif.
ALL GOOD FOODS ARE
A correspondent asks whether
use of milk of magnesia for
many years would account for
face swelling
and a rash, and
whether I
would suggest
a laxative diet.
Without
examina t i o n
even a good
doctor could
only guess
what the face
swelling and
rash may be,
Dr. Brady
and, as you should know, if
you heed what the A M A boys
say, I'm not a good doctor.
. But I can read and write. In
several books by recognized
medical and nutrition authori
ties I read that frequent or hab
itual intake of milk of magnesia,
magnesium sulfate (Epsom salts)
effervescent solution of manges
ium citrate, magnesium oxide
(light calcined magnesia) or
magnesium carbonate interferes
with assimilation of calcium,
and one of the manifestations of
calcium deficiency is hives or
giant hives (angioneurotic ed
ema), which might explain
swellings of the face.
Aside from the harmful effect
of the milk of magnesia or salts
habit in nutrition, the frequent
or habitual use of any such lax
ative or physic keeps digestion
deranged, contributes to devel
opment of pelvis troubles in men
and women, and is as senseless
as the aspirin or acentanilid hab
it. After all, stupid, the function
of the bowel is regulated or con
trolled by the same automatic
(autonomic) mechanism as that
which regulates or controls the
function of the heart and the
function of the lungs. I imag
ine even you would not take a
daily dose of medicine to keep
your heart working.
Just as silly as taking physic
is the notion of following a
"laxative diet." Any food you
like is more or less laxative. No
food is "binding" or "constipat
ing" and don't try to tell me
that you are different from ordi
nary bipeds in; this respect.
Now it may well be that you
have been so steeped in almanac
lore and so thoroughly exploited
by the nostrum makers and phy
sicians that you will brush aside
what I am trying to tell you, as
just another of my strange no
tions, as the A M A would 6ay.
This is a free country and no one
will stop you; if you want to
worry along enslaved to physic.
But before we part I'd like to
make one last attempt to bring
you back to. health. If you are
too far gone, at any rate it won't
do you any harm.
Brother, can you spare a quar
ter, a negotiable one, that is
one not messed up with stick
um? If you can, send it to me,
with a stamped, self -addressed
envelope, and ask for Little Les
son 25. The Constipation Habit
and Colon Hygiene.
After the first reading you

may be mad at me. If you are,
just send the booklet back and
I'll repay you for it. After the
second reading you will, I hope,

Nixon's Cold Hot To Interfere With Trip
Tegucigalpa, Honduras (U.R)
Vice - President Richard M.

It was the first sign of the

vice-president's tour of Central
America and the Caribbean.
Nixon said that he would not
