Loves Boy In Jail

. Parents make a mistake when
they do not give their teenage
children credit for having com
mon sense.
(Q) "My daughter, who is
15V2 years old, is very much
in love with a boy who made
newscopy just last month for
robbery. She does not know
that I know this. I found out
quite by accident, although I
was wondering about the great
influx of mail which I now
know was coming from jail
where this boy is. He is only
16. 1 work and did not realize
how much she was seeing him.
"I definitely want this
broken off, as I now realize
it is getting to a serious stage.
She has hinted that she has al
ready picked out the person
she wants to marry someiime.
She writes him constantly and
I suspect she is sending him
her lunch money. For the past
week I have been making her
take sandwiches to school on
the excuse that I had some
bills to pay. Is there any way
I can break this up without
having the feeling that I have
done wrong to her? I would
like it to be finished with the
feeling on her part that it was
something she wanted to end."

Dr. Hurlock However, it
certainly must be ended sooner
or later, and the sooner the bet
ter. You are wise to want her
to be the one to end it, so she
will not reproach you.
Let things ride temporarily,
until he gets out of jail. Then
keep a watchful eye on the sit
uation. In the meantime you can
do a lot to make her see how
impossible such a marriage
would be. Emphasize how much
money it takes to support a fam
ily, how hard it is for a boy to
get a job if he doesn't: have a
clean slate, and how often juve
nile delinquents become adult
criminals. .
You do not have to -tell, her
you know about this boys' being
in jail, but she will sooner or
later put two and two together
and realize what a risk such a
marriage would be for her.
